  • Lost to a guy that I normally beat...what gives?

This guy happens to be a friend of mine and we race a lot and I usually put almost 2 cars on him. He drives a 89 5.0 Stang M5 with exhaust work. His car is in pretty rough shape and he's spent the last 3 months trying to get it running right...

So the other night (at the track ;-)) we raced and he got like a half second jump off the line and he put a little over a car on me. I was about sick.

There is one factor...at the time my car was throwing a P1870 which has to do with something in the TC slipping, but I actually felt like my car was shifting fine...maybe it wasnt and I was too distracted by watching him walk me to notice.

I asked him what he did to his car...he said he got a new MAF sensor, and got rid of his ghetto CAI. Now, can that give him a 3 car advantage on me or is something wrong with my car???

My mods - Whisper lid w/ K&N, flowmaster exhaust, Y87

could be that his MAF and CAI were really messed up, the new parts could have actually given him quite a boost. Also it could have something to do with the code you were throwing, how did the car feel other than that?

Half second is like 5 car lengths so that might have something to do with.

Yeah but still...I hear about 3800's beating 5.0's all the time. And with my mods and gears....i should have taken him like I always do...

something is wrong with my car.

NOTHING is wrong with your car (aside from maybe a slipping converter)

from a dig, mere tenths of a second at the beginning can make a difference at the end of a race.

getting "the move" from a roll can bring cars that are 1 second apart at the strip to a few mere car lengths.

If it's that big a deal that your 3800 beats every 5.0 out there, then get your mod on and start putting more money into it. But, I'd be less concerned with beating 17 year old V8, and more concerned with just bettering your own times.
