  • My car is SLOW

Well I took my car to the track yesterday for the first time. Someone I know rented out the track for the entire afternoon and a bunch of people ran all day. I got a total of 9 runs in and they all sucked, but were consistent. Out of 9, 2 runs were 15.9, 6 were 15.8, and 1 was 15.7 all at about 85-86 MPH.

Track conditions...HOT. 91 degrees, high humidity, I was told the conditions were about equal to an elevation of 4200 feet, so basically like racing in Denver.

Car info...1999 Camaro Y87 A4 with 78K on the clock. Whisper Lid, Free Ram Air, K&N Filter, and Camaro SS muffler and tips.

So...I was expected low to mid 15's not high 15's and to trap at about 90 MPH. I thought it would do better than that totally stock. I don't have the slips with me, but I ran consistent 60' times of 2.2-2.3 secs. I did not spin at launch at all...full to the floor power braking every time launching as hard as possible, no tire spin. I don't think I could have done any more to drive it any faster. ASR of course was turned off.

So what the hell is wrong with this thing? Was it just the heat?

Sounds about right for the temperatures. But uh, did you make sure you turned your A/C off?

AC was off...heat on between runs to reduce engine temp...windows up (most of the runs, but it really made no difference)...all other accessories turned off.

on the time slip does it tell you your 8th mile time too? Id be interested to see what the 8th times were. My 1994 camaro has only been ran at summer duck and it goes 10.6 with just intake and flowmaster muffler.

Here is my slip...I am thinking based on this you are way into the 16's with that 1/8 mile time.

                R/T----.048
                60'-----2.262
                330----6.556
                1/8----10.112
                MPH----69.80
                1000---13.163
                1/4----15.763
                MPH----86.56

Does this info show anything else about the run? This was my best, most of my runs were ~15.85 and my 60' times were all about the same.

                  Re: My car is SLOW

The 3800 sucks in the heat. You will run better if you return in the fall.

I found a conversion table that says 10.6 1/8 is approximately 16.5 in the 1/4.

Silver 99: that timeslip looks almost exactly like my typical timeslip with this setup: 3.42s, a 3000 stall converter, and flowmaster 80 with 2.5" exhaust. I would consistently run about .2-.3 faster than that. You have to consider the heat, it really drains our little engines, more so than the V8s.

BTW: If you have free ram air you need to clean your filter OFTEN. Take a look at it, you'd be surprised what kind of crap that plastic piece catches that you cut out.
