Has anyone ever tried removing their hatch as a temporary weight reduction mod. I really don't see it having much effect on the aerodynamics of the car since their isn't really anything to trap the air in the back. And I would think that the weight lossed from doing so would outweigh any of the negative effects of removing it. Just and idea. What do you think?

Then again you have the right to your opinion and I asked for it. Don't take this as an offense. I know it would not look great, but I am strictly looking at this from a racing stand point. I am also not talking about daily driving the car like this. I am referring to doing this strictly for weight reduction at the track.

Thats the major problem with taking it off. Though you will lose a lot of weight I doubt it would be much to your advantage.sigpic

i doubt you will even pass inspections at the track with it off

Re: Weight reduction idea?
No track will allow it to pass tech..... wind would flow nicely into the trunk area and be a perfect parachute.... and weight ( a decent amount) would be removed from the rear of the car - not the best thing to do for tractionRace car - gone but not forgotten - 1997 firebird V6

Re: Weight reduction idea?
I have to agree, it will never pass inspections at any track for safety issues. And yes, all the air going over the roof will catch into the trunk and push the force of the car down in the back and hold you back like a parachute.
Also, I've always wondered why people with t-tops say to remove those for weight reduction while racing. That will just pull so much air into the car and act like a parachute. Why would someone recommend this?
