  • time for some drag radials?

    OK, here's my car:

    97 3.8L M5 Camaro
    Pacesetter headers
    3" exhaust
    no cat
    CAI
    LSD rear w/3.73's

Here's my problem. I just can't get traction at the track. I'm pulling 2.1-2.3 60's. I'm either spinning off the line, or almost stalling from too low RPMs. I'm running 245/50-16 Falken Ziex 512 tires. I've heard they're really nice tires, and I agree, they are pretty decent. I'm wondering if it'll be overkill to put some drags under her when I go to the track. I've got a friend who said he had a set I could try, but he's out of town right now. Once he gets back, I'm getting ahold of him to see if I can try them out. Until then, I was just wondering what you guys think.

But it can. I don't want to get too much traction and create enough friction to slow me down. It's just like finding the right tire pressure. Too high and you don't get enough contact, but too low and you get too much it hurts you.

ok but if your spinning off the line, going from street tires to drag radial cant possibly hurt you. theres no such thing as too much traction

how would having alot of traction slow you down?

like 70% of the people here who go to the track have some sort of drag tire

There is such a thing as too much tire, but if you're spinning to a 2.3 60' Drag radials will definitely help.

set the RPM's at 2500 rpms, when the light hits green let out on the clutch and then with a moderate pace, put your foot down

you can have to much and just squat. You want a slight spin out of your tires but not alot. DR tires comes down to finding the sweet spot for the tire pressure and your car

I realize that, however the track I go to is known for crappy track prep. First track I ran at the track prep was soo good that I was launching at 2700, dropping the clutch and flooring it right away with just a little "Squeek" from the tires. Here, I drop the clutch at 2000 and it spins and spins and finally grabs and goes.

it'll bog your engine and squat your car, netting you a terrible 60'.

RadRacer, I know you are in the process of hookin up nitrous to your car. If you have a little spin on the launch N/A now, you wont stand a chance for traction when the juice is on.

Do yourself a favor and get some DR's, you wont regret it

I know. Nitrous probably won't be on the car for another month, gotta get a new PCM and troubleshoot my MAF issue first. I had planned on putting a 1st gear lockout on the kit, so traction shouldn't change much, but I think I'm just going to spray through every gear....not sure yet.

What size/brand would you guys recommend?

My friend has some 275/50's, IIRC that he'd offered me. Too big? He said they're already on rims, so that's no problem.

we already told you what size you should be looking for..however, if he's offering them to you for free, no harm in trying them out
