  • Weight redux

I was driving in my friends mazda protege the other day, and I was bizarrely impressed at how well it handled. For a car with a weedwhacker for an engine it could probably accelerate as easily as my firebird. I couldn't believe it until I looked to the internet and found that that car weighs less than 2000 pounds. This, along with the price of gas, is convincing me that weight reduction is the way to go, before horsepower increasing.

Which is leaving me looking for ways to make my ride lighter, but livable. Has to stay my dd, which means some comforts (like AC! and stereo) are staying.
I'd be happy with shedding maybe 100 pounds or so in the next 6 months, and then 250 over the next year, its like a diet plan for my car lollllll

    So here goes my list-

    Free/under$20:
    rear seat delete
    !spare tire/wrench
    !trash
    smaller windshield washer reservoir
    clean out glove compartment
only drive with <1/4 tank of gas
drill some holes in stuff (idk wheels, random non load supporting body parts. Might have to research this one a bit)
!back hatch (heavy as carp/its summer and the car looks good without it! targa top?)

    Money/more than $20
    lightweight battery
    lightweight seats
    suspension peices (probably k-member?)
    lighter tires
    lighter rotors
new muffler (maybe? I'll look into this)
hood (probably not, its rather expensive, and I like it!)

    anything else?

    Re: Weight redux

driving your car with a 1/4 or less of gas will kill your fuel pump quicker than normal...not a good idea.

there is a big list of items and their weights floating around from the v8 brothers that gives you some ideas of lbs.

I don't think so...I did some searching, but mostly they were cutting things I'm not willing to.

              Re: Weight redux

there used to be a site on here, if anybody has it (i think it was from bfranker's) that had the relative weight of a whole bunch of things for our cars, you could plan it out from there...

                      Re: Weight redux

I put pace setter headers and a high flow cat and cut around 16 lbs.

Your going to drive around with the hatch off??? Pics please.

I'm guessing you'll be leaving the t-tops at home too?

depending on where you live, DDing w/o a spare could be pretty dangerous
                        smaller windshield washer reservoir
you'd have to fab one up...it would be much more cost efficient to just have less fluid in it
only drive with <1/4 tank of gas
As mentioned before, that's a great way to smoke your fuel pump
!back hatch (heavy as carp/its summer and the car looks good without it! targa top?)
you'll pull exhaust fumes into the cabin doing that

                        anything else?
sound deadening in under your carpet...carpet in general...that STB you just installed...dunno if you have exhaust tips, but replacing those with just a turndown would save weight...but, your biggest gains (or loss) are going to be found in replacing your suspension components with tubular upgrades

                          unfortunately, I don't have t-tops.
