why do some 3rd gen's have the 305 and others have the 350? is it a year thing (89/90) or package thing (rs/iroc)? my first car was an 82 firebird 2.8l, wish she had a v8! thanks!

it was a package and a year thing
the 350 wasnt available until 1986 in the tpi.
the 305 could be had on all packages except the trans am had a 305 tpi instead of a tbi

actually , the 350 tpi wasnt available until 87 , there were 50 l98 f bodies made in 86 , but gm still owns half of them so i wouldnt really call that production , and just for the record , trans am's and iroc's both came with lg4's (carbed 305's) and lo3's (305 tbi) as well as the tpi motors . there are so many different combos . gears motors etc .

Yeah, Jeff is right. The late 80's was a pretty confusing year for the F-body engines. I saw a 1990 that is Carb. and I thought they did away with that in 87. Just to add to that I read this 80's article stating that the 305 Formula was faster than the 350 GTA. Probably because it was lighter and not HP related. My car is a 2.8 89 Firebird XS. I was told that XS is of a different kind and I never really bother to find out what.
