• What should be done?

I have a 87 z28 with the lg4. the carbed 305. the slow one.what should be done to make it decent? i was thinking headers, y-pipe, cat, cat-back, open air cleaner and k+n, shift kit, 373 posi, intake manifold, and a cam. is there really anything else that would not be to expensive? by the way stock it is 170 hp 255 ft/lbs. what would this bring it up to

All of that stuff would help a lot. If you still want to go faster for fairly cheap, there is a 335 stroker kit from a company called Powerhouse. Its about $600 and adds 90hp. I dont think they have a web site, but you can get a free catalog from them.
...............I can't seem to find their number now, but they advertise in every issue of Car Craft. They also have some forged goodies and other stuff for the 305.

Also, might want to try www.thirdgen.org if you haven't already. This is a V6 site, so we aren't experts on V8s. Thirdgen.org has even LG4 experts.....

are you in a NAZI E-Check county?

the absolute worst thing you can do is toput the 307 Olds motor in it. What a DOG , no toto can go faster.

everything you mentioned was good but the open air element. go for the "free" ram air, or other cai/ram air set up. keep that hot engine air away from your carb. If e-check exempt, get a good rochester (yes I Like 'em, so what) or any aftermarket carb, non-cc hei distributor, & good high flow cat.

edit: of course, a biased opinion, the best thing you could do is put a pocho 400 or bigger in it, but that's just me ;)

Forced induction? I think that'd be a nice finishing touch after all sorts of engine work. ;)

hey at least you got the 87 higher compression/roller lg4 . i also have an 87 . check the sig

and look at it this way , at least you didnt get 1988's base engine . the lo3.....the lg4 isnt all that bad and can be made to be a pretty decent performer with the right parts .

first thing you want to do with any sbc is open up the exhaust . then work with a larger cam , maybe some headwork .

also , remember to match your cam to your gears and stall converter . what kind of streetability do you want ? gas mileage etc etc . there is a lot of factors when choosing gears

oh yeah my car is no longer computer controlled either . im running the edelbrock carb with a mechanical advance distributor . but as stated above , if your worried about emissions . the only way youll pass is with that cc rochester . aftermarket companies are starting to acknowledge this though , and jet performance makes a pretty decent performance qjet

oh yeah and boost on a 15 year old motor with 9:3:1 compresson isnt always a great idea ;)
