• help with 2.8L mods

Hello. My friend has just bought a 87 camaro t roof with a automatic 2.8L V6 in it. He is really proud of it , and since i am his only friend who is into muscle cars he asked to help him soup it up. unfortunatly, I have only heard of bad about these motors. :( . I am hoping some of you can disspell the myths and/or help me out with some tips on how to get him some horsepower. Any suggestions are welcome
QUESTIONS:
1. are their any air silencer like objects i can remove out of the air intake?

2. Is it better for him to get true duel exhaust , or a bigger pipe from the manifolds back? are their headers out there for these motors?

3. Can timing be advanced without side effects to the motor? Will he need a chip for that? what can it be advanced to?

4. Are there any parts such as throttle bodys or something that I can take off a similar era gm vehical to improve performance?

5. <----what one earth is this? LOL

thanks alot for all help and also if someone could tell me the horsepower, torque, quarter mile times, or any other figure these cars have that would be excellent.

Here we go.....

1. are their any air silencer like objects i can remove out of the air intake?
Yes, the factory air system SUCKS! (and not in a good way. Check the modification encycopedia, third generation for a home made air intake that costs about $50. I've got it and I think it really helped.

2. Is it better for him to get true duel exhaust , or a bigger pipe from the manifolds back? are their headers out there for these motors?
Dual exhaust, no. Bigger pipe, oh yeah. Best setup would be a high flow cat, or no cat, with a 2.5" - 3" extension pipe conecting to a high flow muffler. Any muffler will do. I've got a flowmaster 80 series, and it sounds cool, but I've heard its not the least restricted....

3. Can timing be advanced without side effects to the motor? Will he need a chip for that? what can it be advanced to?
I've read the timing is a real PITA to adjust. I'd just get a chip....

4. Are there any parts such as throttle bodys or something that I can take off a similar era gm vehical to improve performance?
Its kinda hard to find, but what do ya want? Cams, headers, bigger injectors, blah blah. Its out there, ya just have to look around.
As far as swapping from other cars, I know of a guy that used LT1 injectors....
Throttle body from a V8 car won't fit. Maybe a 3.4L TB would......

5. <----what one earth is this? LOL
Thats Fluffy.

thanks alot for all help and also if someone could tell me the horsepower, torque, quarter mile times, or any other figure these cars have that would be excellent.
I believe its 135hp, 170-ish tq, quarter mile 17.5 for auto.....
