I was thinking about buying the Hypertech Thermomaster chip for my next Mod ... Is this a good idea? Is the chip good enough, or do I need to buy the power programmer also? How much are the programmers?

Just get the chip. Also get the 180* t-stat if you haven't already. You will also need a "less restrictive that stock" exhaust.
My friend with a 92 RS really liked his Thermomaster chip. You should notice a little more power.
