  • Automatic to a T5

I have a 91 RS with a V6 and an Automatic transmission. And since we are on the discussion of tranny's.. I thought I would ask this question.

How difficult / expensive would it be to swap out my automatic transmission with a standard (T-5)?

I thinking about possibly buying a 305 or 350 V8 within the next month, if I were to do that, which non automatic tranny should I get?

    why? T-5 = no overdrive.

if you do...... get everything, I mean EVERYTHING from donor car. best if donor car sitting beside your car. don't forget ecm, pedal brackets, clutch cyliners..etc.....

    best non-auto for car....6-sp w/skip shift adaptor

same goes if putting V8 into 6er car

question: WHy not just go for te 3.4 swap? Cheaper & easier ;)

Wouldn't I have to change the tranny anyway to put in a 3.4? Just for the fun of it, how much would I be looking at to purchase a 3.4?

      Thanks,

no, t-5s have overdrive, its the ricmond 5 speed with no overdive, but it has really low gears to work well with a bigger(smaller#) rear gear

same tranny, just bolts right up!!! :D

I just reused the intakes, distributor, & sensors. I am even using the O2 sensor right in the pass side exhaust manifold. The 3.4 have 2 O2 sensors, 1ea in the manifolds. When I get the headers put on, I'm gonna have to have relocate the sensor back into the custom Y-pipe.

I got my 3.4 for $210 & a 12 hr road trip to get it. It was $200-$300 cheaper that way than a local one. Also the salvage yards. stick w/93-95 3.4 f-body only. I've seen average ones going for about $500-$600. also check e-bay, there usually is a company from FL selling them.

I did the swap last month...and yes the T5 is an overdrive trans.

The total swap cost me around $600. I installed the pedals and master cylinder first, which took about 2.5 hours. On a different day, I pulled the trans, cut the shifter hole and installed the T5 all in about 7-8 hours.

As far as difficulty, I did my swap on a lift so it was easier. I've never pulled a trans before this and it wasn't that hard but it's a bit intimidating.

I was quoted $2700 for a shop to do it on my 85 2.8L.

              ITs rough...

If you do do a v8 swap I woudl do t56(6-speed)swap, and I would do it all together.

A t-5 won't withstand the torque form a 350, you woudl be much better off in the long run with a t56, and there are swap overkits you can buy, I haven't searched for one in a long time but they are out there.

As for 3.4Ls, I have seen some as chaep as $200 and others as mcuh as $3-500.
