• 3.4 question

New guy here.

I posted this on www.thirdgen.org and was wanting to see if I could get a few more "advanced" replies here.

I have a 2.8 86 Camaro (A4), 3.42 gears. No power options, smog, or A/C, all the free mods and some goodies.

Looking at a 3.4, power pak heads with the 1.8 valves from www.supersixmotorsports.com, undicided with a cam but may go with the cam that is in the package, full port on the 2.8 intake manifold and the exhaust manifolds, maybe a chip, ASP crank pulley, keep the accel ignition, run a custom hooker exhaust with a high flow O/R y-pipe, do a little more weight reduction and leave it at that.

I am a college guy so I can not afford an L98 IROC with the insurance or an LS1 car with the insurance. But I have the knowledge (in aviation maintenance school and done with automotive) and money to swap in the 3.4.

Any thoughts on this combo? I think it will be good enough to pass the 200rwhp mark with the right cam to work with the heads but I would like some other opinions.
Thanks
David

Welcome

you may just have to settle with an Project 85: 2.8 bird answer

I checking into the head flow numbers right now, but I beleive to fuly apreciate the increase i power (and to justify the increase in price) of the larger valves, a power adder should be added. I'm gonna stick w/the cai on my set up & see about finally installing the MSD when I get back. Yo apparently now have only one choice of headers <I got the CHC ones :D ;) ) Maybe see about Karls "extrude honing" of the intake manufolds (if you can afford it) Keep the accel stuff. Save the chip for last. For exhaust, be different....get a Raven exhaust. I've heard one on one of the fellow REDLINEVSIX members cars. sounds good.

which way will you go w/the 3.4 install:
v1: Karls
v2: mine
or
v3: Dales?

Also, check out this sites LOUNGE, I think you will enjoy it, especially w/the coming crackdown at the thirdgen site ;)

When it comes to exhaust I am into performance not the sound , I am looking at buying a spar 2.8 manifold and having some fun with them and the exhaust manifolds, I may combine your swap, Keds, and Dales, I will have about 5 other guys over here so we will get it done real quick :D

Whats with the crack down, is it here or at thirdgen?
P.S. here is the dyno numbers on the stage 1 package 146rwhp at 4600 RPMs 186rwtq at 3400-3500 RPMs.

He has a few nasty ignition and fuel problems and this was on a almost stock 5 speed car  , Ill have the stage 2, 1.8 valves, more porting, much nicer cam :D

[ January 23, 2003: Message edited by: 86camarodriver ]EDIT: I just re read the power pak thread, those numbers are BEFORE the power pak

I have the 2.8 exhaust manifolds if you need them. "Crackdown " in the .org site, you know, about keeping it strictly tech. but then, there has been a lot of flaming going on. Also have spare upper manifold w/tb not using. make me an offer ;)

Combining all of our versions? how so?

for the uninitiated:
Karl, aka KED85: 2.8-3.4 swap, reusing 2,8 intakes, distributer, & front timing cover so he can reuse 2.8 accessories.

Me, aka Project: 85 2.8 bird: 2.8-3.4 swap, reusing 2.8 intake & distributor-but keeping the 3.4 accessories on.

Dale, aka Dale : He's doing a complete 3.4 swap including the DIS setup & ecm. Only he needs to reuse the old fuel rail due to the fuel line hook ups.

Well I pan to use the V-belts so 2.8 power steering, water pump, and alternator, I do not want to deal with the head ache of a 3.4 swap with the 3.4 ECM, wiring harness, and 3.4 intake LOL. I will use Karls tech guide and use the 3.4 distributor, so most of Karls stuff just customise some stuff. How much for the manifolds?
Free???? :D

free w/pickup. otherwise pay s&h (to include packing material/box.

btw, I'm reusing the 3.4 belt setup, just hooked the powersteering lines to the new pump. no headache except finding the correct belt legnth due to the a/c delete. a 3.4 w/open manifolds sounds....interesting

I really REALLY have no time to drive to Downtown INDY let alone Dayton LOL

E-mail me your address (rf805@yahoo.com) and I will send out the check.

After finding out the dyno numbers are only with a ported intake and exhaust I really think I might get 200rwhp. I also found a place that sells chips for 100 ish $$$, 100 more for custom tuning....

dude, you know you're gonna have to share the wealth on the chips ;) . Did you want the upper intake too, or just the exhaust manifolds?

I also have the 2.8 heads, if you want them for a core, ;) ;) , for the supersix heads. But wonder how much shipping for those would be?

A TON LOL, they don't know if they will need them or not, if they do or don't they shipping charge may not be worth it. They said 20-50 bucks if they don't need them.

I think it woudl be a sweet setup...

as for the guy doing the complete 3.4L setup I woudl advise against it or go for a 93 ECM setup... 94-95 the chip is soldered into the circuit board, so none removable.

Dale is swapping the 3.4 motor into a 93 S-10 show truck & kicking the dead 2.8 to the curb.

By the way, what is everyones opinion on a 2.8 throllte body port with the power pak set up?

I think it would be a good idea.

I think it woudl be a great idea... I know on my 3.4L one of the problems is the motor cannot breathe... this is on a 4th gen but the 2.8L is sort of similar but not as strangled as a 3.4L intake in my opinion.
