Ok ive been debating this for a while now and I need your opinons.

I have a 91 RS 3.1 auto. The only mod ive done is the free CAI from the encyclopedia. Im wondering if getting a Hypertech chip (or anyother brand) is worth the money. What kinda increases am I looking at really? I know they claim something like 14%. Whats the good? Whats the bad? Feed me with your knowledge.

I also understand that putting on more mods would help. I may be going for a cat back system sometime in the near future but dont plan on any major ignition work. You thoughts?

I would say no, it's not worth it. First of all if you get the chip, you are going to have to run at least 91 octane fuel to get the performance increase. Second, you are going to have to keep your vehicle near stock to make the chip useful. This is taken from Hypertech's FAQ page:

"Hypertech Power Tuning is calibrated for stock or near-stock engines (engines equipped with high-flow air filters and cat-back exhaust systems). Any additional modifications that alter the engine's airflow and volumetric efficiency, such as installing a modified mass airflow sensor, high-lift or long-duration camshaft, ported heads, headers, supercharger, nitrous oxide, etc., would require new tuning."

I would recommend going for other mods, like the catback you mentioned.

I agree with 91Firebird, it is a waste of time and money. I installed one on my car and you couldn't even notice a difference. I called and told them this, they said that you probably won't notice a difference. I was pretty pissed at this point since I just spent $160 on it, but they took it back.

I had one on my old 92 camaro with the 3.1, I paid 200 for the jet chip stage 2, definantly not worth it, bang for the buck would have been around 35 bucks. That 200 was the biggest waste of money, I bought a new catback and cat for just about the same and It was like a bagillion times better. Put it this way, after you mod the hell out of your car and you can't possibly find anything else to throw your money at buy a chip.
