  • Two questions, one kinda' stupid. . .

Okay, I've had my car for a while and know quite a bit about it's engine and all, but my first question is kinda' dumb and embarassing, but I gotta' find out nonetheless. . .where's the thermostat located? I've looked at websites, service manuals, etc. and can't really find where it's located. I have an idea, but don't know for sure. I think it's in the middle of the block, and if I remember right, it looked like the cover was marked with an "X". Second question is: to have a 160* thermostat in your 3.1L engine, do you have to have an aftermarket chip in your car?

Look under the plenim/throttle body assembly. You'll see a hose running from the radiator to the top front of the block. You have to remove the plenim/throtle body assembly basically to get to it. Undo the hose and the thermostat is recessed underneath. To run a 160 degree thermostat, just put in a 160 degree thermostat, don't think you have to run a mod chip.

t-stat housing is right under your TB. follow big coolant hose from the radiator to the top of the engine block.

you don't need an aftermarket chip but for the 160* t-stat to be more effective, you need to be able to turn on the fan early. most aftermarket chips do this. you can also use a fan switch.

Thanks guys. I wanna' run a 160* or 180* thermostat in my engine, but my engine is stock 'cept for what I have listed. Also, rather than starting a whole new topic for the board, I'll just ask this now: What are people talking about when they say they're "burning their own PROM's"?

Custom or home made chips I guess. Too technical for me. I've already had to replace my ECM and PROM already, so I'm not to eager to mess with it.

stick w/a 180* thermostat. it will run cooler than stock, but not too cold. Only use the 160* if you have a chip that requires it. Otherwise, the motor could run too cool and you could actually loose power.

Not to mention more fan usage due to lower temp t-stat could result in it taking a dive on you, remember the 92s have electric fans on 'em, and these cars are over ten years old.
