i was thinking of doing somethhing kinda expensive and was wondering what was better, i know the camshaft costs less for parts but im betting installation is more (any ideas how much more? the dynomax catbacks would prob cost around $300 total for parts and install) anyway, appreciate your opinions

Camshaft vs catbacks?

I would go with the catback first (unless you are extremely rich). The camshaft is going to be a fortune after installation. I was considering a camshaft until I asked my mechanic the installation fee, around $500  In order for them to install the camshaft, they have to remove the engine, so if you are going for a camshaft, you might as well get your engine rebuilt at the same time. If you have that kind of money, I'd say go for it, but if you are on a budget, I would just start with the catback. Although out of the 2, the camshaft should give you much more power than the catback. My 1991 Firebird - 3.1L V6 with custom K&N CAI, Flowmaster, Sony CD, MTX 4-ch amp, 2 MTX 10\" subs, Sony & Polk speakers, Eagle Wheels

My 1997 Firebird Trans Am with T-Tops, Panasonic CD, Alpine Speakers, MagnaFlow Exhaust, and Lingenfelter CAI.

I was wondering......if it would cost about $500 to install just a cam then how much would it cost in labor to install maybe a powerpack with roller rocker arms and highenergy pushrods?
I heard it was around $800 to $1000 install, correct me if im wrong.

ask how much to st the cam & rockers up then. do the head & cam install yourself, then have car towed for mechanic to make sure timing for cam is correct as he will need to loosen up the rockers anyway. Then mechanic just needs to tighten rockers, install middle & upper manifold & all the other crap that sits on top. just a thought. SInce I've never done a cam install, I'm not gonna go any further, but putting on the three manifolds, distributor & all the other stuff wasn't too hard, just gotta remember to write things down, take lots of pics before, and know which gaskets need to be replaced ahead of time.1978 Formula 461 in progress of being built

If you've got other trasportation and a place to keep the car while it's down then I say do it all yourself, maybe have a friend check your work afterwards. It will be a great learning experience for you and you'll feel great about it afterwards. The cam can be installed without taking the engine out, maybe even without taking the radiator out. The only one I've seen installed personally, the radiator was already out to be replaced.
