  • It's been a while since I've owned a 3rd Gen; so.....

I have a few questions with you people that are currecnt 3rd Gen. owners.

First off I just purchased a near perfect (has a 3.1 and auto though), 92 convert. camaro (hey $2000.00 was quite a deal!). I KNOW that I want to do an engine swap, and I have the time to take on it.... so what I'm wondering is:

#1) What types of swaps have you all seen or had experience with????

#2) What (in your opinion) is the easiest to do?

#3) What is the most cost effective option?

    other question:

#4) Does anyone have 20's on their ride????

    New Quazar Blue Paint job

    Chrome bling-bling Iroc 20's

    The top down

the rumble of a 350..... or something larger.....

    :D yeah.....

    oh, a camaro type R ;)

look at my sig. Ididn't have todo a tranny swap or worry about emmisions, as I kept everything from the 85 base manifold up. The only giveaway right now that it isn't a 2.8 is:
    1) I got my site name chadged from 2.8 to 3.4 slow to go
    2) I kept the 3.4 serp belt layout
    3) The 3.4 exhaust manifolds have the O2 sensors in each of them, instead of the stock 1 by the cat.

emissions should play the biggest factor in the swap. If not an issue, go for the 8. just remember you will need to get a matching tranny, and that the factory tach will NOT work w/the 8. Also, go w/a carbed setup & non- CC distributor as this will let you bypass the ecm. Also, I think you have a VSS, Vehicle sped sendor, instead of an actual speedo cable. Could be a problem, but not sure.

edit: I nly paid $210 for the 3.4 :D

Several weeks ago I wrecked my 92 RS. About 1-1.5 years ago I did a 350 engine swap. This weekend the car was completely stripped, the 350, T-5 transmission, wiring harness, computer, all the engine accessories, etc. So if wanted to do the swap we can probably work something out, because it is all here.

Well you're not going to like my suggestion. I think you should look around the lots for an IROC or Z28 3rd gen because they are very cheap too. I got my IROC for 2k. If you find one, try to sell yours (unless you really want the convertible) then go get it. I've got a friend that had the 2.8 and switched to a 350 and it took a lot of work and money. But if you cant find any, then go ahead and put a V8 in it, but you'll have a lot to do. If doing the engine swap, might as well put the 8 in it.

Yeah, unless you have an auto shop or can do it all yourself your prob going to pay at least twice what you did for the car for the new engine swap once you figure in tranny and everything to get it to run right and legal like. Plus think of insurance! depending on how old you are it could be as much as $6000 a year for full coverage in a sports car with an 8! i would stick with that car and v6 till i could just afford a better car and insurance, but i guess it depends on how old you are. :( but if you're gonna do it anyway put a 350 (like a rebuilt LT1) in there not the 305.

as far as insurance goes....the VIN of the car "say" 6cyl. They may ask if you modified the car. However, if you total it, you get the money/coverage for a six, not an 8.

Yeah a Camaro Type R... :D lol... pretty funny....

Well the car is everything I want (almost).... It is quasar blue, is a 92, convertible, has been taken care of. I have a garage and access to a dealership.... as well as having a friend who owns a performance shop. I don't need to use it as a daily driver since I live so close to work (I bike). So I can take the time to do the swap. I've been cruising the net to get some ideas; I REALLY like the LS1 swap idea.... BUT we know an LS1 and a 6-speed cost some serious $$$$.

So I am thinking an L98 swap would probably be the most straight-forward and cost effective thing to do. I read a few aticles regarding L98 engines and the things that can be done with them. One tech article focused on a head swap and the hp increases were astounding. This car was doing the 1/4 in mid-12's if I remember correctly.

I've seen an LS1 swap in a third gen at the latest T/A Natls here in Dayton. It looked odd & fugly. as in the discussion i the lounge, don't put any V88 sticjers on it ;)

Where do you figure 6000 a year on a 3rd Gen Camaro? I only pay 28 bucks a month with coverage on my IROC. I'm 20 with one ticket from 2 years ago. Its cheap as hell to have a 3rd gen on insurance. My RS is 100 a month on full coverage.

Well i know when i looked into it the companies wanna know the hp of the car too and that affects the cost. oh and the $6000 was full coverage on a like a 4th gen T/A i think, and thats an estimate, it was just an example, i never said third gen camero

Which company did you deal with? Never heard of an insurance company asking how much hp a car has.
