• (kinda) fast 2.8?

Hi (1st post),
I'm currently in the process of fixing my Beretta (3.1, rod went, possibly piston skirt, find out soon), so I can sell it and buy my friend's '87 Camaro 2.8/5-speed.
So has anyone tried to make a 2.8 reletively quick? Anyone successfully accomplish this?
I wouldn't actually spend a lot of money on this, but I can get a 2.8 from an S10 for free and if I stumble across a 3.1/3.4 crank & rods, maybe port & polish the heads & intake mainly for practice (match ports, etc.), I can do 3 angle valves at school. So basically try to set a limit of $100-200.
I plan on swapping it out for a small block 8 and drive the car while I'm building it, though someone has suggested a 3.8 swap and that'd be cool just because, who has a 3.8 3rd gen? Besides Turbo T/A's.
Not that I'll do anything to the 2.8, just that I might and was wondering.

I don't currently know of anyone who has a 3.8L 3rd gen, and for the record I've 'heard' it's hard to do a swap from a 2.8/3.1 to a 3.8--Could be why I don't know of any 3.8 3rd gen'ers. 2.8's are a decent engine, but the one you want was called an "Iron Duke". Not sure what years it came in, but there's info on http://www.thirdgen.org/ . I've heard if you're gonna' get a smaller GM engine, to get that one. It's fairly easy to modify. I'm not saying the 3.8 swap can't be done, but a 2.8, 3.1, or even a 3.4 would be easier. My sister had a '93 stock 'maro and it was pretty quick.

I probably wouldn't bother swapping in a 3.8, just save for the 8, but for the right price...
My friend has a '93 Firebird 3.4/auto, with a rebuilt engine (sounded like a diesel when he got it), it ran a 17.3 on tires close to slicks (smoke one off, rotate). It didn't have traction problems, so its apperently just slow. I've heard that its just his car and 3.4's normally aren't that bad.

Well if your friend sold it really cheap I'd say go for it, but there are a lot of 3rd gen Z28's going cheap these days. I'd look for them, it will save you a lot of work.

somebodyn mention engine swap?

The rods are the same between the 2.8/3.1 engines. 3.4 would be the easiest, however, comma, if you can score a 3800 Series II, w/tranny, & enharness w/ecm, DO IT!!!!!!.

What he said, but I disagree on the 3.8, IF you can find a third gen turbo trans am motor (3.8) THAT would be the motor to get. Fastest production trans am had the motor :D

A 3.8 swap isn't as hard as it's made out to be, the reason you don't see any is that it's basically a small block swap but you only get 6 cylinders and 200HP instead of 8 and all those gobs of torque from a small block. I think the 3.8 is one of the best 6's GM has put in a car ever excluding the turboed 3.8 and 4.3 from the GN and TTA and Syclone/Typhoon. To keep it cheap grab a 3.4 and build it in your garage and do some port and polish just for fun and practice. Good luck and keep us posted

I don't know any fast 2.8 F-body. Eventhough I've decently modified mine. I do know a couple of fast 2.8 Fieros with turbos.

well, if you want to spend a few bucks on custom fitting in a super charger to your 2.8 its not that hard to do concidering its only a belt, and twin turbo will fit also in a custom job to your 2.8 but i dont thnk it'll be a big difference, if u want somthing different then go for both
