alright, ive asked this on thirdgen.org and i guess i want to see what the general consensus is on here too.
im debating going to 3:73's from my 3:23's
is this worth it?
i know my off the line acceleration will be awesome but i dont want my top end to just plain suck.

I think the answer depends on how much highway driving you do. If you mostly do city driving, I'd say go for it. The only thing holding me back from 3.73 gears is a 50 mile roundtrip highway daily commute to school. Actually your car will improve in acceleration in all gears including highway speeds. The only problem is your car might run out of steam before it hits the ~120 mph limiter (because the rpm's will hit the rev limiter before you get up to that speed), but hopefully that isn't an issue you face too often. Phoenix on this board has them, maybe he could give you some advice. Also don't forget you will have to get your speedometer adjusted for your new gears.

I've got 3.42 and they've got decent acceleration and still stay at about 2100-2200 RPM at 70 mph. Switching from 3.23 to 3.42 probably won't be much of a SOTP difference but switching to 3.73 will definitly make the car come alive.

3.73 - These do not come as factory equipment on any F-Body. 3.73s offer arguable gains. Low-end acceleration is excellent and you can be assured of quicker 60 foot times with 3.73 gears equipped. **However, the 3.8 V6 in naturally aspirated trim tends to fall flat on its face in higher gears--fourth for manuals and third for automatics. 3.73s will put you in those high gears quickly, so then when you actually get to the top end your acceleration will be decreased at best, butchered at worst.** Additionally, with 3.73s equipped your engine will be rev quite high when driving at highway speeds, typically at 2500-2800 rpm. For prolonged periods of time this can cause excessive engine wear and terrible gas mileage
see, i found that on the drivetrain guide for 4th gens, and i just wanted to make sure i didtn "fall flat on my face" in higher gears. and since the 3.1 has 60 less horses than 3.8's, i thought it would affect me even more.
and is phoenix a 3rd gen owner?
and yea, i already have my plans to get my speedometer fixed, so im good ont hat

thanks for the info 3.4, and no im not debating whether any f bodys came wit 3:73s from the factory. i just posted that because thats where i got the idea that my acceleration would suck extremely at top end. (notice the stars around the parts where it talks about it)
p.s. who wouldve thought 3:73's on a 4 cyl?
