I am looking into maybe getting a 3rd generation now. I have always liked the style that they have and all but I want the most power I can get out of it with the V8 and all. Does anyone know the best year(s) and whether thats a Z28, IROC or Trans Am and approximately how much HP and torque they had. Thanks guys.

89 Turbo T/A, otherwise, 92 Would be the pinnacle of the 3rd gen cars. I'd say 89& upshould be good, but w/so many bolt ons available.........

89 and up are good because they have serpentine belts and more performance parts, got a 350, 305's are slugs. 91 and 92 Z's are nice because they have the most power and have air density and not mass air flow. Whats nice with these cars is that for $400 and less you can get the holley stealth ram intake and get a little over 40 dyno proven RWHP over the stock TPI set up! Any stock LT1 part or LS1 part you can use, aluminum drive shaft, LT1 cams, shocks, springs, rear ends (just get rid of the ABS if you get a IROC). Turbo trans ams are nice but you are limited in performance stuff. Anything 1989 and up is good. For fun driving, mod the 350 then drop in a T56 6 speed, its a BLAST!

3.8 TTAs don't need performance parts.

        :D

By the way, 305s don't get the credit they deserve. A properly built 305 can haul!

I test drove am 87 T/A with the 5.0 engine today. The dealer told me it was a 350 but i am pretty sure 5.0s were 305s. Anyway it ran pretty good. Definately noticeabl torque difference in my 3.8 and this one. Anyway, he says the lowest he can go is $2800. It has 155k miles, pw,pl, auto, alarm that goes haywire along with the power locks, t-tops (a must for me on whatever the next car i get is) BUT it is missing the breather I think is what its called...no air filter or anything it has the actual intake tube but it is connected to nothing..... I know thats not good and I don't know how long it has been driven like that or anytihng. I was wondering if it was a good deal and all....I'm not sure I'm sure about it yet. I think I would rather try and hold out for a later model like you all said to get an 89 or newer with the 350. I havea lot of 5.0 mustangs driving around my town that are modded and always want to race me and all so I am trying to get something that will hold and/or beat them and I can't afford insurance on an LT1 or LS1 so thats not my best sollution and I want an 8 cylinder also...I'm keeping my 6. Anyway, thanks guys.

If it has no air filter, don't get it. Period. Like you said, you don't know how long its been driven around like that. There's an 85-or so rd Firebird near me w/T-Tops. I'll check it out for ya. Loks better than my car, which is a plus ;) . They have $2295 on it.
