Car is running very bad, looks be running on only 4cyl, not sure what happened. Uncle of mine seems to think that it may have a blown head gasket. Although compression and spark seem to be fine, we are not sure what the problem is.
Going to pull motor apart tonight - Replace the following:
Any suggestions is very difficult to do when I don't have the car in front of me. Or in this case, I have no idea what the car is doing or not doing at any given time or load or speed. Detail in description is essential here.
Jim
Well, the car usually starts up after some serious effort (the motor keeps turning and will start after about 10-15 seconds of continious turning). When it fires up, the motor runs very rough and bumpy, the smell of gas is very strong and light gray smoke comes from the tailpipes. If I rev up the motor, it seems to cut out pretty bad, when I drive it, it has no power.
My uncle did a compression check with a device he has and according to my book, he said it is running in normal range. The spark plugs and wires seem to be firing normally as he physically removed the plug connected to the wire and checked the spark.
My uncle did mention that the middle cylinder on the drivers side was spraying way too much gas. I am not sure what would be causing this unless the fuel injector was stuck open, or a bad fuel pressure regulator?

Ok... Any suggestions?
i smelled gas when i drove... it had no power, and idled rough..
it was a cylinder 5 misfire.. i changed everything, plugs, wires, coilpacks, injectors and fuel filter..
then last night i was bored and cleaned the coil packs and the connections to the coils.. and that fixed my misfire..
im not familiar with the 3.1. check your distributer..
cause i checked the spark on my cylinder 5 also the same way your uncle did... even tho the coil was somewhat bad.. it still fired.

That fact that it smokes and has lack of power points to one of two things: too much gas or not enough spark. Just because you pull out the spark plug and check it in the open air under normal atmospheric pressure doesn't mean that it will fire in the compression chamber. Remember, compression for our motors runs around 115-130 psi. That's makes it a lot harder to fire. Also, check the fuel pressure. There is a Schader valve on the top of the fuel rail that you can attach a fuel pressure gauge to.
Let us know,
Jim
Not much going on, replaced my Kenwood double din stereo with a Pioneer double din, the Kenwood had problems. Then replaced my power inverter for my reverse...
