  • Accel coils are junk!

I put an entire Accel ignition system on my car last semester. Wires, cap/rotor, ignition coil, etc. This week in fuels/ignitions class, we tested the ignition on the car. Advertised maximum voltage output for the coil was 48,000 volts. It tested at only 25,000V. What the f? I called them up and they were given me a ton of crap as to why it wasn't doing what it was made to do and why it was 'MY FAULT'. Luckily, I had taken other tests and wrote down the specs so I easily answered all of their 'stumper questions'. I am getting a refund. A purchased a MSD coil and installed it. I do notice a difference. And it does put out 40,000V. Now I have to replace the junk Accel cap/rotor. I don't want that new MSD 6A to take it out.

MSDs canbe known to destroy inferior equipment. I would hate to be cruising down the street and have the car die because of something like that.

The Accel coil I was using seemed to work fine also. It wasn't until I performed a power balance test that problems were noticed. The MSD didn't help either since the coil was putting out about 50% of its potential.

do 3.8ls have 1 set of coils or 2?

            my dsm has 2 coils
            cylinders
            4,1 on one

            2,3 on the other.

maybe you're supposed to test them connected or something.

3800s have 3 sets of coils with 2 posts per coil. Those coils are neat in the fact that everytime the coil fires, both spark plugs are fired since they are in series. Besides testing for ohms, you have to test the coils under load. You can't get a voltage reading without the vehicle running.
