well as i posted awhile back im in the process of hunting down a vacuum leak thats causing the old 89 camaro to die. Well up pops something new. I start it up and the rpms go to 2000 and stays. It sounds like its fixing to taxi down the runway.
I turn it off and try to restart it and it wont start. Let it sit for awhile and try again. It starts and jumps to around 2000rpms. Its surging and idling up and down. Its not setting the engine light off during its rampage. Any ideas

Did you ever find the vacuum leak? Vacuum leaks have a tendency to make your rpm increase.

A real neat trick I learned at school to find vacuum leaks involves a fogger machine. The one we have was modified with an adapter so it would plug into the intake (or plenum). Once the fogger got hot enough, we blew some smoke into the system and waited for the smoke to come out of the leak (which was an intake gasket). The smoke machine costed like $50 and I am not sure how much the modifications ran but it was cheap (and has saved SO much time finding vacuum leaks). I suppose you could even do the same thing with a smoke bomb. You know those fireworks that do nothing but smoke and make a nasty smell. Just make sure that you remove the air filter so the excess smoke has a place to go.
