The base timing is set at 10 degrees btdc (where it should be). I have tried advancing and/or retarding the timing with the MSD and/or Accel Module installed and it always gets worse regardless of the combination. The code 42 is still intermittent and is contained to the ignition module, the bypass wire, the EST wire or the computer. It will set when an open is detected in the bypass or EST wires.

try this: regular "by the book" timing setting, use stock module, and set to 12~13 degrees. Once set, replace Accel module back & hookup MSD. How old is the timing chain in that thing? Also, on my origonal distributor, the pickup that spins inside the reluctor ring was spinning, & wouldn't let me time it. The one I have now is actually of off a V6 cavalier  . But it works ;) Just giving you more stuff to worry about  ;) 1978 Formula 461 in progress of being built

The distributor was just rebuilt. New everything. It's weird because I found to different wiring setups for the 6A (one in my installation book and the other online). The only difference is that the ground wire (white in color) that goes to the ECM and tach is not used. So I cut it out and plugged it into the auxilary tach output on the MSD. No more code 42. ??? It also idles better. I also noticed that the wire had a fair amount of corrosion in the section I removed. I'm willing to bet that all of the wires in that area of the harness maybe in the same condition (including the EST and bypass wires).

I have noticed one variable about the problem. The code only sets if the engine is 180 degrees or hotter. The rough idle also gets worse when the engine gets hotter. I have contacted Accel and am waiting to here back from them about it. Only problem is that I don't know if the heat is affecting the control mod or the wiring to it. I will be running some tests on it to see if I can narrow it down. Other thing that leads me to believe that the wiring is the problem. When I had the stock control module installed, the car would not run with the bypass wire unplugged.
