  • Fuel Guage not working. its dead

My factory fuel guage doesn't work. Its stuck wayyyyy passed the full mark. (the guy who owned the car said its like that cause he just filled it up  ). Went to start the car this morning and it wouldn't start, here it was out of gas. I put $25.00 worth of gas in it (even though the guy said he already filled it) and the gas guage never budged.

I checked all the fuses underneath the dash and they all looked good. Do they make aftermarket gas guages and if so, what's involved in hooking it up? thanks

the sender usuallygoes before the gage does. How many ohms is it reading?

Where is the "sender" so I can check the ohms? Also, how do you go about checking the ohms, will I need a multimeter?

you'll have to pull the gauge cluster & identify the fuel gauge wire. TehYes, use a multimeter to read.

The actual sender is in the tank. Gimme a minute or too to find the GM range, but the higher the ohms, the fuller the tank.

I had this problem w/my 63 Stude. Gauge ws reading 1/4 tank more than what I had. New sender unit fixed it no problem.

best way to check it now, is to take reading w/gas in, then siphon out gas & take another reading. if ohms never change, then your sending uit is FUBAR. easier than dropping tank. If ohms change, then check wiring to gauge & guage itself. If ohms never change, then timeto drop tank.
