Stupid question, but where's the EGR valve on the 3.1's? The almighty Haynes manual says shows there's a "digital EGR valve" kinda to the left and back from the throttle body (just fore of the A/C condenser) but I've read other posts where people "push" on the diaphragm to close it back, and I did some pushing but there's nothin' budging. Also, I know what the part looks like, and the only thing that looks like the EGR valve does not have 2 bolts holding it down. The "digital valve" has a hard, ribbed, metal hose going from it to the TB, but it looks WAY more complex than the parts I've been looking at.

That's the one. There's three solenoids on it and it has three bolts holding it to that riser off the passenger side manifold. Out of that riser there's the metal flex hose the recirculates the exhaust gases to the intake.

Anyone obtained one of these for less than $100? Everywhere I look, they're over $250. Or even cleaning one? Are they a b***h to clean?

you could always delete the egr but you will get 1mpg worse gas mileage, worse emissions, and set off the egr code.

I haven't got a clue. All I know is the V8's and the V6's are not the same, and the 3.1L's are apparently hard to find cheap. EBay has some new for about $99, but that's the best I've found.

                Re: EGR Valve

                Hi There,

I had also some probs witch the EGR valve on my '91 V6 Bird.
Code 32 appeared constantly on the SES error map.
The cause in my case was a broken coil.

You can check this EGR unit at a verry simple way:

Disconnect and Dismount the unit from its saddle. Wath out with the screws or bolts because they're can come weak after all these years and it's possible they break !!
First cleaning is a good job, disassembling of the unit is simple, you can clean every inner part of the unit with Isopropanol or similar alcoholsprirtus product.
Then you need a ohm-meter and you have to check the resistance value of the 3 coils, it has to be 3 times a similar value. If that's OK, you can put 12V on each of the coils when the metalcore is in the unit. When connecting it has to give a 'clicking' sound. If all of this seems to be OK, there can be a problem with the electrical wiring tot the computer module or... your module is gone...

Eh... what's wrong with your car that you accuse the EGR valve?

                Grtz,

                Xavier :)

                  Re: EGR Valve

Nothin' like postin' back like 8 months later, huh? Well, my car's had a rough idle for a while now, but this is an update: I've had the plugs and wires replaced, replaced the PCV valve and as recently as yesterday - replaced the IAC valve and cleaned the TB and the port where the IAC goes. Lotsa' black stuff came out, and it idles better, but still no cigar. I did notice yesterday that there is a cyclical "ticking" sound coming from right around the firewall. I can't pinpoint it though. I know it's not the A/C on/off relay 'cuz the car runs bad w/ or w/o the A/C on. Still puzzled. Some say the cat could be clogged, but I dunno. What's weird is when it first starts up it'll run like crap, but it's like after it gets warmed up, the problem almost goes away completely (highway speeds - it'll still buck on me though).

                    Re: EGR Valve

i always go for the free stuff first:

autozone caini test/check the throttle position sensor & the ignition control module free. plugs & wires replaced, but what about cap & rotor?

if the cats clogged, you'll aaccelerate like crap (been there, done that)

                      Re: EGR Valve

Well, I finally threw a code and I went to AutoZone and they said that my car's too old to check (something about no key), but the guy did explain to me how to check it myself. The thing is now, I have a Haynes manual and I read the part where they find the Diagnostic Link, but where is it on my '92 'bird? I can tell from the pic they're lookin' at the driver's side under-dash, but I can't find anything like what they're lookin' at. The only thing I see that's even close has a bunch of banks plugged into each other with multi-colored wires runnin' to it.

too old to check my as$, those lazy bastages

on my old 85, it was under the dash, right side of the steeringn wheel. there was a cover hiding it. If they have no keys, then use a paper clip or some wire to bridge it.

Did you have to remove the kick plate (not the little plasti-foam piece that protects all of the fuses and electrical crap)? Maybe it'd just be easier if I used some digital masterphy...

sounds like the egr to me i just went thru the same thing and replaced a ton of parts trying to fix it! let me guess does it only buck on lower rpm's? like right after it shifts itl start bucking unless you hit the gas and kick her down?
any ways i bought one and it totally fixed the bucking and wierd idling. let me know if your camaro has these symptoms -o and by the way mine wouldnt throw a code it did foer a second once but didnt catch it in time before it shutt off
