I know there's probably a billion messages about this, but I would like a more personalized opinion. I picked my car up from the shop today only to find out it has a cracked head. The shop owner recommended a rebuilder to me that will charge me in the neighborhood of $2000 for a rebuilt engine - installed -w/a 3 year - 100,000 mile warranty. Or, I can do the obvious and fix the cracked head on an engine w/over 200,000 miles on it for around $1500. What would you do?

    Re: Cracked head

i would buy a beater pull the engine and go all out.
if it was going to be my DD for quite a while i would opt for the rebuild
if i was going to sell it id fix the head and get rid of it.

      Re: Cracked head

I'm emotionally attached to it and it is my DD, so I was thinkin' of the rebuild. Anyone who offers a 3 yr/100,000 mile warranty on a rebuild is a hero in my book.

is a 3.4 swap out of the question?

if it's down to $1500 for a head fix & $2k on a rebuild w/warranty, pony up the $$$ for the rebuild.

          Re: Cracked head

I actually called the shop back and asked them if they'd put a 5.0L in it, but they said what comes out goes in. Makes sense though - 'cuz it'd be hard to warranty an engine for that long that wasn't w/the original specs.
