Back pressure from clogged cat converters possibly busted cylinder 2 in the engine. Taking the car to get a compression test to see the general state of the engine until then I won’t be driving the car anymore to try to spare what’s left.

Sorry to hear, you going with a rebuilt engine if it’s blown?08' L76 6.0L 4X4 Chevy EXT.Cab LTZ Vortec MAX with Snug top cover, Dynomax exhaust,Hptuners& K&N intake

Yea there’s no way I can ever trade this car it was my dads and we lost him in his last deployment. Wouldn’t trade it for a million bucks and a Lamborghini. Was checking the spark plugs earlier though and it seems like there was a possible blow out in the 3rd plug tomorrow I’ll be replacing the plugs hopefully that’ll stop the misfire I’m getting or at least help

Nice, good luck with it. Yeah plugs can tell a lot.Last edited by ssms5411; 01-27-2020, 08:11 PM.08' L76 6.0L 4X4 Chevy EXT.Cab LTZ Vortec MAX with Snug top cover, Dynomax exhaust,Hptuners& K&N intake

Sorry to hear about your dad.
What were the results of the cylinder compression test? And what made you narrow it down to both a clogged cat and possible cylinder damage on #2?
What's mileage on the engine? The valve cover gasket would not prevent oil from getting onto your spark plugs. Typically that will prevent oil from leaking on the outside of the engine

I haven’t done the compression test yet. I narrowed it down to clogged cats based off the codes the CEL was throwing for the last 6 months. The engine has substantial miles ( 166,638). I’ve had oil in the plugs before and replacing one side of the valve cover gasket along with some seals stopped the oil from leaking into the wells (this was about 2 months ago) but now I’m having the same problems.

Odd- curious to see the results of the compression test. That is quite a few miles on it, but not too crazy either.
What is the cel codes you are getting?

Yea I’m wondering what the compression test will show too but I’m not going to do it until I replace the cat converters but instead of stock converters making the whole job around $2,500 I’ll be doing BBK long tube headers which come with high flow cats for around $900
the only code the car has been putting up is a P0420 which is why the spark plugs never got checked for oil but once the car was trying to stall out and misfire That's when I decided to check the plugs.
Im hoping the misfire is only due to the spark plugs and not the cylinder

I would be looking at the O2 sensors. Have you put a scan tool on them to verify they are reading correctly and not lazy or dead?
bad O2 sensors will cause rough running and misfires. They can also attribute to causing a cat to go bad as your fueling will be off.
you can verify if you car is clogged by unhooking your exhaust setup before the cat. It may throw an o2 sensor code for your sensor after the cat, but you should be able to see if it corrects the backfire problem. This is assuming the cause is not your o2 sensors before the cat. Those are easily looked at on a scanner.
