Re: 4-banger turbo?
Motortrend is garbage. That hobo down on 14th street has more reliable automotive information. Sometimes they have real information and other times they just make stuff up so they have something to print.

Re: 4-banger turbo?
well it seems that they should just put honda baging on it since they are looking into the I4 turbo charged engine. What company does that. Ford put a I4 in the mustang and the car sucked. When my friend had his the car would literally stall or sputter at take off, or the revs would shoot up as the car would barely move and his stang was a stick. The engine that his Stang had was based off of the german car Merkur XR4TI, but the differences that ford had taken a serious approach to the I4 for the XR4TI and they just skimped out on the stang so my guess is that Chevy would probably would do the same thing to the Camaro if they decide to go with a I4.

Re: 4-banger turbo?
My buddy sold his stang and bought himself a Golf GTI. That is a little pocket rocket, but getting back to I4 as I do agree with you. The only thing to say is why would GM consider of even putting a I4 turbo charged it would definitely sound like a ricer car, personally i like a deep throaty exhaust sound not a high pitch wine when I floor it. For GM it was already enough to put a V6 on the Camaro but now to put a I4 turbo charged would be going back on the Camaro's roots.

Re: 4-banger turbo?
roots? As I said before, Camaro already had an I4 in the 80s...no, it wasn't anything special, but it would not be the first time. I'm not entirely convinced that an turbo I4 would be a horrible thing...you have to consider the context keeping in mind the 2020 CAFE regulations.

Re: 4-banger turbo?
It has always had a I6 or a V8 not a I4. In the 80's Gm made a camaro with a I4 and guess what it really sucked. I kept that engine for about 1 week then I did a transplant to a V8 and boy did it burn up the tires. Not trying to pick a fight or anything but my personal opinion is that the Camaro should stick with either a V6 or a V8 not a I4 T/B wouldn't that be degrading it.

Re: 4-banger turbo?
Forget about some stupid concept that a car has to have a certain number of cylinders to be manly. A 300hp twinscroll I4 that is easily modable sounds pretty nice to me.
The camaro's heritage doesn't have anything to do with the base model anyway. It has to do with the V8 which will still be around. The base model is just used to make money so there can be a V8 model.
The base camaro is going to have a lot of competition coming it's way. It needs to be good looking (check), have a good suspension (looks like it will), have a great interior (they are saying it will), get good to decent gas milage, and have good power. Gas milage and power are pretty easy with a FI engine and they already have a good engine sitting in the parts bin. Yeah they also have a DI V6, buy I would think a board like this would want something cheap and easy to make fast.
There is about to be a lot of competition in the small sport coupe segment. Hyundia, subaru, and toyota are all bringing something to the table in the next few years and I wouldn't be shocked if you see nissan step in with something also. It would be nice to see the base camaro match up favorably to all those and the next gen mustang.

Re: 4-banger turbo?
Well Nissan has the skyline that it says it's going to bring to america. There have been rumors like that for the past 4 yrs and I still haven't seen the skyline hit the streets. Nissan's skyline is way more power than anything I've seen so far. The previous models that are in japan which are the R32 and the R34 have been extremely power cars they can easily make good numbers at the dyno with just a few mods. Japanese companies make most of there sport cars with a I6 turbo charged which that gives out more kick than a I4. If Gm wants to compete in there range I think they should just invest in a good V6 turbo charged engine. Subura does make the WRX and the STI in I4 turbo charged and so does Mitsubishi offer the Evo in a I4 turbo charged only difference that would be between those cars and the camaro would be the AWD part. But I would like to see the Camaro with a I4 turbo charged to see how fast it's going to be.

Re: 4-banger turbo?
Nissan did bring the skyline over. It is our G35. They are also bringing over the new GTR it is starting to hit shores now I believe. The turbo inline 6 has pretty much been ditched by everyone except BMW at this point. The RB engine in the previous generation skylines was no where close to meeting current emission standards so it went bye bye. None of that really matters though because GM isn't facing a base, or any other, camaro against those cars. The Z06 is taking on the GTR and the ZR-1 is taking on the GTR v-spec. Unfortunately, neither corvette seems to be winning.
Anyway, the cars I was previously referring to are cars that will be coming out in the next few years. Hyundai has the Genesis coupe which is going to be a FR setup with a turbo inline 4. Toyota and Subaru are working on a small sports coupe together and people are saying it will probably use a Subaru ej engine and could be FR and or awd. I imagine Nissan will want to join in the party with something to replace the dead silvia.
I just think a turbo I-4 camaro would be a good platform for this community. Yes, a turbo V6 would obviously be nicer, but GM doesn't have one in their parts bin and I don't see them spending the r&d money on it for the base car.
