I dont know if i want to cam my car, but i thought about getting a set of ported heads with some nice rockers and springs

whats the biggest size of spring and rocker i should go?
what kind of hp gain should i get?
will it give it a better lope in the exhaust

    Re: Rockers and springs

I dont believe it will change the sound as you are only changing the lift and not the duration with rockers. As for the biggest rocker you should get, depends on the cam you are possibly "thinking" of getting in the future, and what exactly is being done to the heads. With head work done for clearance purposes You can make a 1.8 rocker fit with a cam... but generally guys run a 1.7 rocker with a cam...you won't see much of any difference with 1.7 rockers without a cam from what Ive read...to really see anything you need to go with a 1.9 rocker, and the 1.9 you cannot run with a cam.

If you are pulling the heads to do them, honestly, doing a cam is like 1 more step...literally...if you choose to do a cam after, you will be redoing most of that work you did for the heads over...actually I would say about 98% of it...

so if i have the heads off the car, what else is needed to finish it off and take the stock cam out and put the new one in?

if i dont get a cam i would run a 1.9 rocker, but if it isnt to much of a hassle i might go ahead and cam her and run some 1.7

what spring should i use with either rocker? will ls6 springs do good? or should i go with a stiffer spring

I would use the 105# springs, I rememeber when I did my research I read about it being better then the LS6 because it is a stronger spring, but has less seat pressure in the higher rpm range.

Basically you should be doing your timing chain if your doing heads and cam I would think...Im still looking into this, so maybe someone else could chime in for the timing chain...I have an upgraded single chain...but honestly, its just pulling off the crank pully/bolt, maybe 8 bolts to get that front cover off, then slide the cam out and the new one in...

to do the heads you have to have the intake manifolds off (both LIM AND UIM) pull the lifters out, they are just sitting there, there is I think 2 bolts that hold a cover on them, so take off those 2 bolts and pull them out.

So basically, its an extra 2 bolts to pull the lifters, an extra 8 bolts or so to get the front cover off (wont take long, depends on how dirty the bottom/front of the engine is, they are not hard to get to, just some of mine were so caked in dirt, I was trying to take off bolts that didnt exist lol) jam the flywheel, and pull off the crank bolt...the crank bolt may come off easy, or it could be a PITA (mine took 6 hours) others have had it off in 5 mins...depends on how "good" its on there...if you have an acetlyne torch your laughing...and ya thats about it...other then any tuning that has to be done, and you might want to upgrade you injectors...which you may wanna do anyways even if you dont get the cam...depends on how much more airflow your going to be gaining with the work done to the heads.

If it's performance your after go with the cam. The 1.9 rockers don't really give you much.

I would save up and go cam as well...its not much more money...although I should be one to talk...Im doing most of the work over when I do the heads and intake manifold...

definitely go with a cam fondle---worth the little extra work for the bigger power.

i plan on going abbott stage 3 h/c and 1.6 ratio

I have the 1.9 Yellow Terra roller rockers with the LS6 springs and retainers and it's not worth the cost for the almost zero gains from them. Tuning was needed after the install to see any improvement at the track. Even if they cost the same as the re machined stock 1.9 rockers from Mace it still wold not be worth the cost.

                      Re: Rockers and springs

Deffinately go with the cam swap. I just did it and its really not all that much work to take off the timing cover and lifter retainers. Trust me, if i can do it, just about anybody on here could. Its worth it. There is deffinately a gain in hp (not a crazy amount) but some and with the head work you should see a nice gain. Putting rockers and valve springs on doesnt do really anything for hp gains by themselves but if you are doing a more mild to aggressive cam you need to put new ones on. Good luck man.

I'm not arguing with you, I only said that because I have 1.9 rockers in the for sale section right now... I think this thread should be deleted... lol... jk

I need to work on my sales pitch a little I guess...
