I have a 94 camaro but a also want a firebird. I have found a guy selling his 96 firebird with a blown head gasket for $500. The car it's self is in decent shape. My question is: How hard is it to fix a blown head gasket and what is needed. Is it even worth buying like this? If anything is to be done to the car I plan on doing myself. Thanks

Re: Blown head gasket
Replacing the head gasket is not too bad. Question is whether or not the engine is still good. With a blown head gasket there is a chance it could have been severely overheated. The heads are not aluminum so they are not as likely to warp, but beware it may need additional machining or replacement. With the rest of the car in descent shape $500 for the whole car is a good price. You can replace the engine and still be getting a bargain.

Re: Blown head gasket
cost me 300$ for parts/gaskets/fluids to replace the head gaskets on my 3.4
its not difficult but will require a good deal of time to do. i can help you step by step if you want. but like stated, you may have some other work needing to be done to the heads if it did overheat.

it's like 60 bucks for a whole head gasket set/intake gasket set
25 for oil and 3 for a filter.
throw some spark plugs in there for another 30 dollars.
still not close to $300

Re: Blown head gasket
ok, so i reworked some #'s. It's closer to 185$ for everything you need. but who knows what else you need to replace while your in there?
I forgot that i had included the cost of the TCC set and all the other stuff that had to do with cam break in like a whole nother gallon of oil and filter etc.
just another reason to pick the car up, considering how cheap it would be to fix.

Re: Blown head gasket
consider your options...you can fix it for cheap...you can swap motors for cheap...you can find very cheap 3.4 and 3.8L motors...as well as crate motors sell for 1500-2000$...swap any of those in, and if the car is in very good shape...you have virtually a brand new car... you never said how many k's are on the car...so you may be fixing a worn out engine...Id say sit back and consider your options...then do that...if you have the means to do the work...you just walked into a deal, regardless of what road you choose...
