  • several Head questions

Given my current build with the ITb's I am doing, I am trying to figure out what size valves I should go with for both the intake and exhaust side...do you think that 1.90 is too big for my application? should I be going with 1.84 instead?

I will also be milling the heads down to there max...I think it is 0.020? I have to double check...not sure if that makes a difference.

With the valves I get...I should be ok with normal valves right...I dont need to be looking at turbo valves or anything like that right? I think they only make the turbo ones stronger because of the heat produced correct?

How are the valve guides on the head? It almost looks like it is one piece with the head?

and lastly...I believe v8's run a rocker arm with a 3/8 stud...what is required to make these work on our heads? (they are much cheaper) would I just need to tap our 5/16 hole to take a 3/8 hole? or is there more to it?

    1.86/1.55 vs. stock 1.80/1.52 with a .02 head mill

is what i used and it worked out pretty well

I thought you snapped a valve on yours Ryan? I think our rocker are 7/16 th's , which can be found I believe from Comp Cam. , For valves dependson how much the cam and how much flow you'll be needing but 1.89/1.90 and 1.55 is a good set up just make sure you get some stout valves, SI valves seem to have problems , Manely makes different valves for the intake side and exhaust side to fit your needs.

what are the problems that SI valves are having? What about the ZZP valves?

crap ok...what about the ZZP valves, anything wrong with those? The manleys are like $145 for 6...thats twice what ZZP wants for theres...

and as far as the rockers go...I can just tap that hole to make it fit a 3/8 stud right? The v8 rocker arms are soo much cheaper then what available for us...plus more guys sell em used...

Not to get off topic, but I thought the problem with the SI valves was that they couldn't be run with anything higher than 105# spring rate... is there anything else wrong with them?

I think Ryan was running 105# springs when his went...Im going to assume they must of had a bad batch?

                    Re: several Head questions

I know many people are using stock valves with 130LB springs with no problems, but Manely would be the best upgrade but they will cost you , local shop priced me out about $30-$40 a valve. So I'm staying with stock valves or going with Manely. I think Ryan got the valves from wickedsix from Abbott used so it didn't surpirse me much one broke.LOL

even if from abbott the ones from zzp were breaking on people too. It wasn't just one bad batch. Search the grand prix forums for some of the stories ;)

fack...what about LS1 valves? I know the ZZP valves are LS1 blanks...so they are taller...would going with an LS1 valve work? or am I stuck going with Manley? (there good just costly)

Another question...Is there any down side to running a .576 lift on a dd car? Is it possible on our heads?

Wow and i thought that .5389 lift that im gonna run was a lot, LOL

Not on a stock head of course. The guides need to be cut down, thats what i am having done otherwise your retainers will destroy your seals.

haha...I know, I think it might be a little big...do you know how much the guide needs to be cut down? We were thinking of making bronze valve guides, so instead of cutting it down, maybe we can just make it to size...(I dont even know if I'll see any benefits from the bronze...I may just convince my buddy to let me go buy stock ones if they are not expensive)

But, would there be any disadvantage or reprocussions of running a lift that big?
