  • Might be getting some parts installed

So Meatyshells is going to help me install some parts on my car before my turbo:

P/P 02' heads with new stock valves had a 3 angle valve job and Comp 130LB springs W/ ZZP modded retainers and Viton guides.
MLS .062 head gaskets, ARP head studs
P/P upper/lower intakes, ALM lower gaskets
    Comp Oem lifters
    JP double roller timing chain
    Machined oil pump cover
    Comp .105 pushrods
    65LB injectors
    oil PSI kit
ZZP 10.3 mm spark plug wires
NGK TR6's or maybe NGK TR7's spark plugs
I have all the gaskets and bolts already , I should have my rear QA-1's on this weekend with my front end raised up another 1".
Then I should be set for the turbo setup I hope.LOL Thanks again Ryan

LOL J/K ^Spare parts will be a new single rolling master timing chain W/ tensioner, the heads, 2 sets of 105lB springs 1 set 10,000 miles and 1 set new and some COMP-OER lifters, that have 45,000 miles on them, new set of SI stock size valves thats about it, rest is going on the other L26 engine in time. So not much in parts since they are needed for the other engine.

Re: Might be getting some parts installed

L26 engine is a 3.8 FWD with L32 connecting rods forged, and the heads have bigger exhaust side stock and you just need to swap over the oil pan, oil filter assembly ,upper/lower intakes and the rest off the old 3.8 engine. I haven't bought it yet , but it has 1200 miles on it and is $400 well with tax $430. I just got my engine stand, its just going to be a project for some JE 9:9.1 forged pistons, Clev. 77 bearings and maybe a different cam well see how the VS cam does, hasn't let me down yet.LOL
OIl PSI kit is just the spring and some other parts that came with the kit where the oil filter assembly is. Just like I got the machined oil pump cover also. It should hold the oil PSi around 70-80 PSI at idle and through the gears, better for the bearings and turbo if you run one keeping it cool and lubitcated.

Install that jp double roller at your own risk. The chains are known
breaking. There's a big thread on clubgp.com about it.

Rolling master and JP are the same CO. so there no really any whereelse to get one. I guess well install it right and I'll keep my new single handy just in case. I heard about them awhile back, but I wonder if the people that broke used a machined down oil pump cover and had the cover milled so it doesn't rub, I know threy were saying use 2 gm gaskets but I would just mill it down and just use one gasket.

Actually I found some good info on double rollers over on FTv6, I'll post it here cause I know steve is banned :p

                              guys were saying that
You have to pull the balance shaft gear, machine the correct chamfer on the crank gear, machine the oil pump cover and use a paper GM timing cover gasket
because apparently these weren't actually designed for our engines, and by having a double roller it doesnt come down completely straight, but rather on an angle...

most of the breakage occurs from two issues. The chains themselves are pretty darn stout.

issue number one is the oil pump backing plate. a lot of people still choose not to do this. this is problem as the chain rubs on this and will eventually fail as the links are rubbing on the cover. Some people think and have been given the wrong impression by one of the vendors that running two gaskets is good way to address this. This is wrong, because of two reasons number its leak prone. Number 2 once both gaskets are compressed it still normally isn't enough clearance. Also if you use the felpro metal shim gasket that is even thiner then the stock gasket.

issue number 2 is this. The austrialian and us cranks are slightly different. both timing sets are originally designed for the austrailian motor. The chamfer at the snout of the crank is slightly different between the two allowing the gear to not sit exactly flush like its supposed. This causes a slight misalignment between the cam gear and the crank gear. This puts undo stress on the chain and causes it to break. The reason the rollmaster has been better is that they use to use a slight higher qualty chain which early JP sets uses as well. The solution to this problem is some slight machine work needs to be performed to either gear or the crank. Most people don't normally pull the crank so the gear is the obvious answer. Once this misalignment is cleared up no more chain issues should occur.

When you have both the above mentioned issues occuring at once a timing chain can break rather quickly. one of the sad instances in the v6 world is that people tend to do the bare min for a cam upgrade and going. weather its do to being cheap or just plain not having the money to do the upgrade. either way it makes there seem like there is more failures do to bad products.

Finally for a double roller chain if you have the proper link count and length of the chain you should be able to replace it with a bunch different aftermarket units but i would talk to the manufactuer before doing so. i believe the chain length in the s2 is identical to that of a Grand National. But i still have to do some measurements to verify.
