  • Lifter installation help

I am currently in the process of changing out the cylinder heads and would like to replace the lifters while I am in there with the Comp Cams OE style. I have the 3800 (3.8L) series II block.

My shop manual is very vague when it comes to the installation of the lifters. It does say to soak the new lifters in oil prior to installation but then it says after the lifters are in the engine block to just install the pushrods and tighten the rocker arm nuts in two stages- one to a specific torque and then rotate another 90 degrees. It says nothing about rotating the cam to a certain position for each lifter before tightening. This is not normal to what I am used to, which is rotating the cam until the pushrod is at its lowest point of travel and then tightening the rocker arm down until there is a specified amount of play between the pushrod and the rocker arm. Can anyone who has done this procedure on their 3.8 give me some more advice? Or is this really all there is to it?

    It's really that simple.
The rocker bolts are not reusable. (TTY)
Buy stock replacements, or get some reusable ones from zzp.

Thank you for the reply. Just wanted to double check since the procedure seemed suspiciously simple compared to what the 3.4 guys have to do with theirs. Once again, thanks!

i would use your method by turning the engine and tightening the the rockers on the closed valves.

im pretty sure my haynes manual even says to do this, but im not certain, and its not by me so i cant look it up for you, maybe someone else can.

also, tightening the rockers like you said and checking pushrod play doesnt work for these engines, because the studs are made to stretch, so they cant be reused, they should be torqued to a specific amount.
