  • Running only 5 cylinders...

Recently my car was skipping. I had it brought to the shop. Replaced fuel injectors, plugs, wires, o2 sensor. Mechanic says it needs a new computer. This after i already spent $600.

So in a last attempt before i sell it for parts, does anyone have any idea what might cause my car to only run on 5 cylinders, other than a computer?

I would, but a new one could charge me another $600 to still have it not work. If i don't get any other ideas i'll probably get a 2nd opinion.

ok, well first things first is to figure out which cyl is misfiring. A good mechanic will trouble shoot this kind of thing before just replaceing everything in sight.

Do you have access to a obdII code reader, like a really good one?? cause that will list each cyl. misfire and record how many times it misses. figuring out which cyl is missing is the key to fixing the problem.

No access to a code reader. Unless a store like autozone does it??

check ignition coils and do you smell gas ?

Yes ignition coil was looked at, either replaced or was fine, don't remember. Yes smells badly of gas, and using twice as much gas than usual.

sounds like your fouling plugs then.

                              Re: Running only 5 cylinders...

I had a bad fuel pressure regulator that caused a severe misfire on cylinder 2 and rich condition.

BTW a GM dealership will plug a Tech II into it and tell you how many misfires per cylinder for free if your nice to them.

Check your fuel pressure with a gauge you can rent from autozone.
