  • How to get to Lifters

I've just got a simple question. Do you need to take the heads off of the 3800 SII to get to the lifters, or do you just have to take the upper and lower intake manifold off. I've got a noise that I believe is a stuck lifter...

just the upper and lower intakes, no need to remove heads

you do however need to pull the valve covers off and remove the rocker arms

    Abbott long tubes,homemade true duals,slp ram air,whisper lid,eibach springs,kyb shocks,BMR subframe connectors, BMR LCA reloc brackets,BMR LCAs. T-top/manual converted

In the same boat. Just waiting for spring. I think you need to replace some of the gaskets tho....just not sure which ones are needed.

In the old SBC's you could remove lifters by just taking off the valve covers, there was a long tool that slide down the pushrod hole and pulled 'em straight up and out if i remember right. Is this still the case or no?

you can remove the pushrods from under the valve cover, but not the lifters, the intake needs to be taken off for that

While we're on the topic.. I haven't been into my intake manifolds either and I believe I have a noisy lifter too. Any advice on any specific lifters to buy? And maybe where? I just looked on autozone and they have some melling brand that's like 10 bucks a pop.

melling used to make awesome oil pumps for the SBC, but around 15 years ago they changed some things and cheapened the pumps to the point where nobody would buy them because it was a guaranteed fail.

i havent heard anything bad about them recently though, but they are a reputable company, not some cheapo lifters you could buy at harbor freight

OEMS are fine...infact it is reccommended to go oem rather then the OE R series...

Comp Cams OE lifters are what you will want. Stay away from Comp Cams OE-R unless you like noise. I have the OE-Rs and hate them because they are so noisy

X2, I have OER's and they are noisey even after 45,000 miles, I have Comp OE's to go in their place.

Another quick question.. sorry if I'm thread jacking.

I'm replacing all the pushrods as well.. I installed the pushrods that came with my yella terra 1.7's and I honestly don't know much about em. Please correct me if I'm wrong but I imagine they're stock length and specs. Either way, I need a bit of guidance with a damn good pushrod. I've got heavier valve springs so I need everything strong. If you're wondering they're just 105's but heavier none the less.

If yella terras are light weight don't use them , I bent 8 out of 12 light weight pushrods when I used intense's pushrods. The Comp 5/16" pushods are doing fine right now , but I will go alittle heavier with Comp .105 's when I get the Comp 1.7 Pro Mags rockers on and switch from Comp 105lb springs to Comp 130lb springs.

Re: How to get to Lifters

yeah push rods are something that you DON'T want have "lightweight" you want the strongest push rods you can find because if you hit your rev-limiter or accidentally downshift when you want to up shift you WILL bend a light push rod.

anyway, thanks for the info guys :D
