  • Some 3.8 build questions.

I am working on building my 97 3.8 Camaro to be a road race car.

To fit the rules for my class I am planning on doing eBay CAI, Pacesetter headers, balance shaft delete, 1.9 rockers and LS6 springs.

For the timing set I am considering going with a roller set to eliminate the dampener eating with the LS6 springs, but I am unsure which to go with.

Has anyone used any of those?

im only really familiar with cloyes, but only on v8's

if it was me, i would go with either the cloyes or the comp cams, i dont trust edelbrock stuff, especially stuff thats going in an engine.

your looking up 3.8l series 2 timing chains I hope, looks like those aren't for your engine. Go to a 3.8l company instead of summit or jegs for 3.8 specific stuff. That way you know you are getting what works with our cars. A lot of 3.8 buick parts are for the older cars or grand nationals

Good point, I forgot about the earlier block. When I put in the year they all disappeared.

The problem with the 3800 specific suppliers is they charge way to damn much. $110 for a single roller timing set is a joke.

well that's what happens when you are dealing with a small market. Demand isn't there for the larger companies to step in and mass produce them like small block chevy's. $110 isn't that bad for a single. Look at what most of us running double rollers had to pay ;)

Kinda screwed on that end. Most of these larger companies, as 97rs has stated, just don't want to supply the parts for these 3.8l as they do the V8 cousins. Its not worth it to them. Messing with these V6's surely isn't going to save you money, but there are good deals on lightly or gently used parts if you know where to look.

Damn, but oh well. It is still cheaper than replacing the timing damper every few thousand miles.

Can you run LS6 retainers or do you need the modified L36 retainers for LS6 springs?
