    Re: Heads

I found a guy thats going to wait for 2 weeks until I can come up with the cash to buy a set of 1998 Heads. They come with everything. He said they come with rockers, keepers, retainers, springs, valves. I am going to change the spring, retainers, keepers and possibly the valves. He said $120 shipped for both. He's going to email me a picture of the casting number tonight so I can get you guys to confirm they are the better set of heads.

So far so good. I may get my grandmas boyfirend to help me port the heads. He builds racing go karts and ports and polishes those heads really well. He use to race nationals but has gotten to old to race. I am sure he could do a good job on these as well.

Are the Manely valves better than the SI valves? Also stock rockers are fine right?

      Re: Heads

manleys are stronger, they can hold up to more, plus some of them flow better depending on the style you get. stock rockers are fine.

        Re: Heads

Yea I don't want to worry about bending the SI's(going to use nitrous and cam). I am probably gonig to go ahead and get Manely valves just becuase I want new valves if I am going to rebuild the heads. What about valve guides. Do they also need to be changed or altered after the Manely valves go in?

To all of you that haven't been able to deal with ssms5411(Steve) on a buisness transaction. He's a standup guy. Held my valve springs until I could afford them and even longer than he was suppose to. Thanks again Steve.

          Re: Heads

I believe you need new guides when you go with manleys as they are a hair bigger/smaller on the stems....I think new ones from gm would be fine...the heads I am supposed to be getting come with bronze valve guides...so Im pretty sure a shop could probably make them for you. I havent seen them for sale anywhere...manley makes awesome stuff, the only thing is they are expensive as hell...if you really want to customize your stuff, I think the cheapest I remember finding manleys was on SD's website, so you can check them out if you want...I would go find a local shop personally and talk to them first...then begin shaping this project how you want it to turn out...I held off on these for so long because it gets very expensive very fast...hell, even gaskets are like 150$ for the MLS head gaskets...

I could have sworn I seen on ZZP's website Manely's sold there. Where do you purchase these valves?

Will the Fel-Pro head gaskets be alright to use once I get these heads ready to put on? Those cometic ones are rediculous in price.

ya felpro are fine...but felpro are stock...cosmetic ones are more durable and you can get thinner/thicker to help with your compression ratio.

basically if you get the thinnest head gasket available, and mill the heads 0.020 you should be able to get 10:1 or 9:9:1 Compression ratio over the stock 9:4:1

I was going to mill .010 because I read that some were having problems at .020.

                      Re: Heads

Choppers I have an extra set of MLS head gaskets from ZZP their .060 thickness(stock is .062) , I went to a .065 thickness due to I'm going to run my 1.7 Pro mag roller rockers and wanted extra clearance/thickness for the turbo pressure. I had mine milled at .010 and thats fine for milling so you know the heads are straight, I wouldn't go anymore becuase if you over heat or something you'll want to have them milled again and checked for cracks. Thats why I only do .010 milling when I do my heads.

ya thats what I am milling as well...I believe (someone correct me if I am wrong) but every 0.006 you shave off by either shaving the head/using a thinner gasket, you gain .1 compression.

My researching has paid off. Yea my thinking was just like Steves. Once I port these and if I overheat I want to at least be able to remill them and reuse them.

                              should be stock...which I believe is 0.062

They should be stock size .062 since they are direct fit and not a aftermarket product like the MLS gaskets. ZZP even has the stock size listed as .062 if you check the MLS head gaskets section and will tell you how much .1-.3 compression if lower in thickness or going up in thickness.
