    Re: head install problems

I found out those two bolts were for 1) to hold the the ICM bracket to the head, and 2 for the alternator bracket, bracket lol...I have that one loosely just sitting in the head, I hope it'll be fine...too much of a pain in the *** to get it in...I sat there for 45 mins getting 1/4 wrench turn at a time until I got it half way down and said F'it

Car sounds awesome, but kinda like **** at the same time...my headers are just resting in the Y pipe, so it has a huge exhaust leak, and you can tell...I'll have it running tip top tommorrow, for now its ok to drive so long as I avoid cops...instant ticket if I pass one. You cant have a convo with the car on.

The holes for the front coil pack bracket bolt, and the alternator bracket to
head bolt, go through the head. Look at the stock heads you pulled off and
      you'll see what I mean.

Water (rain) can and will find a way in there if those aren't tightened.

Im pretty sure that bolt hole doesnt really go anywhere though...plus, I have the passenger side about as tight as the driver side...its down there as "if" there is a bracket in place...

I bought new bolts for my heads just incase I couldn't get the studs out of the old ones. I have no EGR or Pass. lift bracket so its pretty easy to get to stuff. I'm might move my coils to the firewall , but will see. Post a sound clip when you get a chance so I will have a idea of how it sounds with those heads, is it a big difference in tone at idle and driving?

my camera sucks balls, but I will see if I can get anything half decent...its hard to tell differences right now, I have my headers just resting in the Y pipe, and not bolted in right now. You can hear the major exhaust leak, so the idle is back and forth with sounding good, then sounding like **** lol.

I gotta get the Y pipe bolts on shortly now.

              Re: head install problems

Ok, so couple things...car seems to be running good...I do hear a clicking sound from the engine bay though at idle...its not a tick, its clicking, so I dont think it is the exhaust...it moves with the rpms as well...fairly audible.

2ndly, I decided to open it up on the highway. The car is supposed to shift at 6000 rpm, but it went up to 6400 before I let off because I was worried. Can this be caused by using too short a pushrod? My 2-3 shift almost never slips that much...I am worried to try this for the 1-2 shift ....

                Re: head install problems

The clicking , your sure its not exhaust, did you go around the engine checking, also could be injectors since your working them harder. Don't really know what size pushrods did you install? Did you replace the lifters this time ? What lifters are you running? I noticed you concerned with the size of them, with other people running the abbott cam I would think they would be able to tell you what size pushrods to run. Thats why I like Comp Cams you can pretty much get away with the 7.05 pushrod lenght on about all their cams aslong as your not milling .030 the heads, running .045 gaskets and taking some off the block. A exhaust leak from the headers from the Y pipe can sound like its coming from the engine , so I would check every part of the exhaust . What did you TQ your rocker arm bolts to? Did you us the reusable kind?

I put in a 7.00 pushrod now instead of my previous 7.05", I did that because I took 0.007 off the block, and I am running a 0.054 headgasket. The lifters were replaced when I did the cam last year, they are comp OE lifters. I torqued the rocker bolts to 11ft lbs and a 90 degree turn, just as haynes manual states to do. I can hear the sound from both sides of the engine, thats what has me concerned...the fact that the car did not shift out of 2nd gear at WOT also has me concerned...it shifts fine at part throttle though.

                    Re: head install problems

How about the heads, most do .005 off them and since you got them used they were probably milled but who knows how much unless the original owner told you. So they could be too long maybe, I guess a checker for pushrod lenght would be good.

I doubt they are too long...I put the 7.05's in and rotated the engine and all seemed to be fine, like it wasnt hard to turn or anything, not 100% sure how to tell if they were too long, but the 7.05's appeared to be fine as well...I just put in the 7.00 for good measure, if anything I am worried they are too short, but like I said, I couldnt lift them when the rocker arm was fully off the spring, I could only rotate them.

Now, I also get a little bit of white smoke come out of the exhaust briefly on decel if I just rev her up...not sure if thats just some stuff still burning off...its just a small bit, and only when u let off the gas after a rev.

How long should I wait until I can start romping on her? Ive done a few WOT test runs, only to 5800-5900 or so rpms...she doesnt feel as if she is pulling that much harder? I kinda expected quiet a bit more. (mind you, I didnt feel that the cam really gave me much either and that put me into the 13's, so who knows)

She still feels like shes pulling slow from 60mph-80mph ish...

lastly, I've always had a bit of a studder in the car at about 40mph just as the converter locks up, depending on the load of the car, its almost like the car can't make up its mind...this studder/shake is much more violent now...but only at 40mph under that certain load condition...no other time.

I am thinking the pushrods are too short, as I have been reading that they would make a ticking sound...I'll drive cautiously to work monday, and then when I get home I will pull her apart and recheck for lash, I just found an awesome thread as to how to check pushrod length http://www.ls1tech.com/forums/genera...od-length.html so hopefully she will hold up fine in the mean time.
