That depends on the rack and pinion that he currently has. There are two different options available (found this out last month when I stupidly ordered the wrong one...). The cheaper model is for the V6 and is angled slightly differently than the V8. It's just enough difference so that the intemediate steering shaft will hit on the headers of the V8 and you can't connect it to the rack (least that's what happened with my LS1).

I definately agree that a donor car would be the way to go for a swap. If I had to do it over, I would get a donor car instead of just the engine and tranny, b/c little differences pop up that you might not expect.

Word of advice though (won't matter if you get a donor car), if you go to the LS1 steering rack you NEED to get the LS1 intermediate steering shaft, otherwise you're steering rack won't be centered and you'll have 3/4 of a turn one way, and 1 3/4 turn the other way...

When I swaped my 96' F41 rack out 16:9 ratio to a 02' LS1 FE2 rack 14:4 ratio I just bought the rack and replaced the rag joint coupler with a LS1 coupler and its alot tighter ratio plus the rag joints suck, mine was falling apart and had alot of play in the steering after 165,000 miles and 14 years of driving.

Yes, my Firebird came with the Y87 package (Ground effects, "dual" exhaust, Chrome rims, 3.42 rear end w/ LSD.)

So it seems that a donor Trans Am will be the best option. I have been searching for a decent priced one. What's a good going rate for a wrecked/junked one?

I'm guessing you have both, but just to clarify...

Y87 is 3.42 and posi with dual exhaust and a V8 steering rack.
W68 is ground effects and dual exhaust

Well actually it seems its not the Y87 package like I originally thought. It has the 3.42, but not the LSD. I asked my friend for the codes for the 3.42 and LSD, which are gu6 and g80. I checked the door jam after and only has the gu6 code for the 3.42

I'd snap that Formula up, if it wasn't a 98!

I'd go $4000-4500 , I'll have to PM the guy, I forgot my sign in and password for that site , does anyone know if it is still for sale? I would go $4000 easy for it, but I will have to fly back there and pick it up and drive it back to AZ thats the only problem. I wouldn't pay a trucking Co. $1000 to ship it here which what it would be. Plane ticket and gas etc. $500.

Its in VA, My sis (sister) lives in Yuma.

Its all cosmetic. Ive been drivin that and two of my trucks. It has high mileage (162,000) but still runnin strong. Trans shifts fine, has a hypertech and chirps in second, I keep up with the fluids. Doesnt burn or leak anything. Before it was mine it was a girls car and she sold it becouase she was tired of getting side ways lol.

Soo, it runs, drives, and rides great, and interior is pretty nice too.

Ive had an ls1 up to 250,000 miles before I sold it. So the milage doesnt worry me. Im sellin to fund a garage and a sale is not necessary. It will just take longer to build the garage

Ill get you some good pics of the engine and interior. Youll like what you see

If you buy it, We can work something out and ill drive it to you and i will fly back. That way I can stay with my sister for a few days.
