  • Intake manifold removal - do I need to remove the fuel rail

    Hi - I need to lift the right side head and of course to do that I need to get the intake manifold off; but as time and space is limited I'm wondering (before I start) if it's really necessary to get the fuel rail & injectors off first, or can I get the plenum and manifold off without doing this?
    I'm asking because I've removed the fuel rail before and I know how easy it is to damage the injectors and don't want to compromise the O-rings on the injectors and fuel line entry points to the fuel rail.
    So, anyone able to tell me if there's a hidden bolt somewhere that I can't get to without removing the fuel rail etc?

    Yes, it needs to be removed. The intake manifold is 2 pieces, I'm reasonably sure you can't pull the upper out without taking the fuel rail out. Honestly, taking the fuel rail out takes all of 5 minutes or less.

        X2, remove it and then you can look it over to make sure everything is in working order and the O-rings and stuff are still looking good.

          If youre gonna be replacing intake gaskets and whatnot anyways the gasket set comes with new o rings...its 4 10mm nuts and the fuel rail comes off...oh and you need a torx to get the map sensor out.

            It is possible to leave the fuel rail hooked up to the fuel lines, though...
            Rebuilding the engine... Building a custom front end... T-top conversion... Custom rear hatch..
            Custom interior...

              Yeah i usually leave it hooked up. I just tuck it up in between the hood strut and the hood

                Thx for the replies - I was just asking not so that I could get away with less work - I know it's not a difficult job, just that I know how easy it is to damage the injectors and was there a way to avoid that possibility - the suckers ain't cheap!

                  I've never had a problem damaging injectors when pulling the rail. I've had o-rings tear, but those are wear items.
