  • l26 l36 or l67?

    Hey guys, happy early 4th. I went to the junk yard earlier to find a motor for my camaro, there wern't any in any of the f bodies there but I found a couple in different cars. One was in a buick regal it had a plastic thing over the motor that said 3800 tpi I think, and another in a pontiac bonneville that had the same plastic thing. I'm not sure of the years or mileage on either car, but the regal had a plastic uim and the bonneville had a metal one. I don't know how to tell if its an l26, l36, or l67, but based on what I've looked up either will work with my f body parts. Assuming they have somewhat low miles which one should I go after? Any advantages with one over the other? Thanks guys.

    Those are just engine covers and they can be discarded,just a couple of clips.

    The FWD engines will work,you need your flywheel,intake manifold and accessories.

      06-08, pontiacs, buick lucernes, and a few others for the L26, it would be the best one to get, but make sure its a N/A and not supercharged so you can use the heads. you'll need your upper/lower intake ,TB , front cover with oil filter housing , oil pan , and swap over your A/C , and power steering.

        This should help to identify between Series II or III, if the engine covers are long gone.

          Wow, I didn't think there were that many different 3.8s. I guess my idea won't work, both those motors look like a series 1 l27. Thanks for the input though.

            So the l26 heads are better than the 97 l36 right? If I can get my hands on an l26, can I swap my viton valve seals and comp cams valve locks over to the better heads?

              Yes all the parts are the same , if your going to build it up though , now would be the time to upgrade the valves. If you were going to P/P them and go with bigger stronger valves, milled and also have the guides cut down for higher lifts.

                are you still looking for an emgine? im selling my L36 shortblock if your interested, was rebuilt and has about 45k miles on it right now. Not sure what your build plan is.
