  • GT1 Cam in stock Engine

    Hi all

I will replace the crankshaft and head gaskets of my camaro next week. Since I have to remove the front cover, the heads and all that stuff, it would be easy to install a GT1 while I'm there. So far so good, but:

    1. Can I use the stock valve springs, pushrods, etc. with this cam?
    2. What gain can be expected on a almost stock camaro? Is it worth the time/money?
    3. Would you recommend another "sniffer friendly" cam for a daily driver?

Or should I just install a set of 1.9 RR?

Only Mods so far: Cat-Back, 160°F Thermostat and HP Tuners to tune the PCM.

    Thanks for your help!

    Greetings from Switzerland!
    Mat

You'll get more power with the cam, you can use stock internals , but I would go with some stiffer springs since your in there Comp 105's should be nice and maybe some lifters Comp OE's to stock specs if you have alot of miles on the engine. You could also do ZZP modded retainers, Viton guides and Comp 5/16 pushrods. Since you have Hptuners you should be able to pass any inspection. I would also look into replacing normal wear and tear parts like timing chain and tensioner, oil pump pickup and maybe a oil PSI kit stock , not the one that ups the oil PSI to 80 at idle. After that I would do headers, exhaust and suspension. Good luck.

96' Camaro M5 to A4 conversion, alot of mods . GT35R Turbo full suspension. Built engine

      Thanks for the quick answer!
Yes, I plan to do the exhaust when my camaro is on the street again. The engine has 78'000 miles on it, so I think I should change some parts.

At a minimum you need to get some stiffer springs, either the 105's or ls6 90#s yellow springs, zzp modded retainers, new timing chain, and damper. Headers will really benefit your cam also. Here is a link to some cheap 90# ls6 springs, http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/LS6-v...item2558afc257
        Hope this helps

I searched the web and that is "the plan":
          - GT1 Cam
          - Comp Cams 105 Springs (LS1 Style)
          - Retainers (LS1 Style)
          - Comp Cams 7.05 5/16 Pushrods
          - New Chain and Damper
          - new Rocker bolts and Camshaft bolt

How does this sound to you?

My camaro has to pass the sniffer test. I don't know if it would pass the test with a GT2. But I don't think so...

I run the abbott racing cam, and I pass emissions (sniffer) over here no issues.

                  2002 SOM Z28 Camaro - 12.9 @ 104 mph
                  1996 3800 Camaro - 13.43 @ 100.77 mph

You could go with so modded retainers so later on it will give you extra lift if you decide to go with some 1.7-1.8 rocker arms. But the Comp 105's and evrything else looks good. I have a VS cam and so far it has be great with all power adders(waiting on how it responds to the turbo) then it will pass all the tests of power adders. I'm adding 1.7 Pro Mags rocker arms to mine to increase lift to almost .550.
