Legal issues with the DMV? You can put whatever motor from whatever year you want in your car.
In Maryland if you change the engine in a auto, The new engine must be the model year of the car/ truck or a newer model year and all emissions equipment must be installed and working. It's the law but it is hard to enforce.
Here in AZ , the Emissions didn't say anything to me when I converted from a M5 to a A4 since I already had my Dr. sign off for a Disability hanger plaque for my rear view mirror. They just asked if any other changes were done, I just said exhaust dumped before the rear axle thats why it so loud , so they wouldn't poke their heads up their to see no CAT. LOL But their is a desiel resonator 4" X 6" 3" in/out that looks like a CAT , so I should be good even if they do look.
