Pullout Trans Am LS1

[Ouch My KNee]

I've been to do an engine swap into my 2000 FireBird convertible and I came across a pullout for sale, but I'm not sure if it's a great deal or not. Here's what it comes w/ and cost. . .

LS1 w/ Auto transmission from a 98 Trans Am 120k miles. Runs good and includes engine, trans, and accessories. It does not come w/ wiring harness and computer. He wants $1,800 hundred for it.It seems rather decent, but anyone know the cost of the computer + wire harness? Good or bad deal?

Ive seen cheaper for sure, and it sounds a bit costly for a 120k 98 engine, with no comp or harnass

PCM / Wiring Harness combo will run between $200 - $400 depending on how lucky you get.

120k miles is a bit steep and plus 98 LS1's really aren't all that great as they have oil pump issues. You seriously need to stick to the year of your car with your engine because if you don't, there will be TONS of compatibility issues...

Never get a first year car of any type cause you'll have all the issues not to mention the legal issues since your engine would be older than the body and chassis of your car I know the DMV would have a field day trying to figure that one out as well as the Insurance company.

Its not the first year for an LS1, they were introduced in 1997, just not in an Fbody.

they go by the vin number of the car.

the ls1 came out in 97' in the corvette.

not a terrible deal. I paid $2800 for mine, 00 motor and trans 46k on it, harness, pcm, steering rack, k-member, harness

Legal issues with the DMV? You can put whatever motor from whatever year you want in your car.

That doesn't fly with insurance though. Insurance companies can easily deny you coverage if you don't tell them about any "performance enhancing modifications". Its actually considered fraud to them.

In Texas we use whichever year model is later to base the inspection requirements off of whether it be the engine, the car, or the date of reconstruction. When I was doing state inspections I had a lady pull up in a 30's model T-bucket with straight headers. It had obviously been rebuilt, and I recognized the 5.0 sticking out of it. First thing I did was call DPS to see if they would require her to have seat belts and catalytic converters which would have been applicable to that year model engine. They had me tell her to just put blinkers on it; she left and I never saw her again.

I wouldn't worry about wiring harnesses for the LS1's , Speartech can make you a harness for about anything you want, for about $200-$300, they made my A4 tranny harness with the pinouts to plug into my PCM and to the tranny. They also have everything labled so you can't really screw it up. LOL Great company though if I went with a LS1 I would just get a LS1 block have it rebuilt for $500-$1500 depending if going forged pistons and then buy the harness, that way you could buy a 98' block and not worry about issues with them. Also get them for alot cheaper too, since noone likes the 98's. You could then also run a 99'-02' LS1 PCM, rebult motor and new wiring='s great things. Hahaha
