  • 300 HP N/A Build.

    Hi all,
After a lot of thought, I've decided against a turbo and will be going N/A.(Mainly because I'll be giving the car to my daughter when she turns 18). I recently got the chance to drive an LS1 Camaro and felt that the 300+ HP was more that adequate for me (and her). My 96 Camaro is a DD and I prefer handling to straight line acceleration anyway. Currently the only mods are an SLP CAI and flowmaster catback. Next mods will be P/P heads, headers, hollowed out cat,Tune, and various parts to get the car safely revving to 6500 rpm. Can someone recommend a cam and any other mods to get me to 300 flywheel HP? This will be my winter project but I have a spare set of heads that I'll be getting machined soon and will do the rest starting in November.Any suggestions will be appreciated.

    Thanks.

Not gonna happen. It would be a huge savings to just buy an LS1. I think Lance from Abbott Racing Heads only got around 270hp, and that was with a max effort drag build.

Non-IC turbo kit on 6-7psi on a stock motor.

It will be way more reliable than any all out N/A build and get you the power you're looking for.

Really? Is that 270hp at the wheels or crank?

I'm a fabricator by trade, so a turbo setup is not a problem for me to build. I prefer the rough idling of a cammed motor to the whoosh of a turbo though. I'll see how far I can get N/A and will add a turbo as needed down the road. I would still welcome any input on a cam choice.

He dynoed 270 at the wheels , but really if you do crank HP you would only need a good cam, headers, exhaust and tune to get around 240 WRHP which will be close to 300 HP at the crank. For me I just plan on running 3-6 PSI during summer and then turn it up to 10-12 PSI for winter just becuase the AZ heat is really bad. Also I like to be on the safe side when it comes to my engine. With the Powerdyne I dynoed 288 WRHP/330 TQ but after 3-4 runs it was already heat soaked since this was in 110 degree heat. So my last dyno run was about 235 WRHP and 250 TQ, which would be what I would be running on the street, unless its cooler out. Its a good idea to get a NA/FI cam so down the road the cam won't hurt you with the turbo. I really like my VS cam 206/216 115 LS and will be running COMP 1.7 PRO MAG roller rockers to up the lifts , also got some 1.9/1.57 Manley Serve Duty II valves for my P/P heads and intakes with bronze guides and the guides cut for over a .600" lift. Just for the future , if I want to turn up the boost. Good Luck on the build.

              Re: 300 HP N/A Build.

an all out NA build and then trying to go turbo after that is not the way to go. Certain internals will be used and cam used depending on your chosen path. So it has to be either NA or turbo build. Unless you like buying parts and then replacing them again later on for the turbo. Just usually ends up being a waste of money instead of doing it right the first time.

Streetability will be best with a turbo setup instead of an all out NA build.

Oh and btw, an ls1 is underrated in the HP category, they are in no way putting out 240-250 to the wheels. Guys are seeing over 300rwhp on those suckers stock, lol. GM definitely lied about the numbers. :D

Lets say this car will never get FI, is the VS cam still a good choice? I was looking at maybe the GT2 with Comp OE lifters and some 105# springs to get the revvs up. Will also be porting and port matching the heads and intakes as well. I'm mulling over the idea of larger intake valves but haven't decided yet. I might have to make a road trip to ZZP. What do you say Mike, You in? Its only a 5 1/2 hour drive.

Where's the fun in driving to Niagara Falls? Been there a 100 times :). We will be making another trip to summit soon for headers and a few nic nacs. May be I'll just make a little (3 hour) detour.

nope, if it is staying NA, get a cam that will fully support your heads/intake setup as well as your gears and if auto your stall. Match them up accordingly and it will scoot right along. :)

So what you're saying is, I should call ZZP and ask them which cam is best for my setup.
                        Thanks.

id port and polish my heads, switch to a ram air intake, get the VS cam cause its a very good 50-50 cam plus its just a much bigger version of the stocker. i just put one in and it sounds really nice with good streetability.then since u can fab make ur self sum long tube headers with a 2.25" true dual set up all the way back into a magnaflow x-flow muffler. it will be bad asss and sound awsome. oh and put a s10 converter in for a nice launch too ;)
