  • Winter Project.

I've been flip-flopping back & forth between N/A and FI for about a year now, always thinking up of pros and con for each. Finally settled on N/A. I prefer a fast car that can take a corner at high speed over a really fast car going straight. Besides, this car will go to my daughter in a couple of years and I don't think it's a great idea to hand over an overpowered car to my kid. I'm in my 40's and still drive like a teenager sometimes :).

This is what I have now:96 w/T5 and 3.42's with Auburn LSD. 70K Miles
    SLP CAI
    Flowmaster cat back
    Pacesetter headers
    Highflow Cat
    97 PCM
    19mm Rear Sway Bar
(looking for 32mm Front Sway Bar)
Rear Disk Brakes from a 2000
    MSD Wires

This is coming next: P/P heads, Upper & Lower Intakes.
    GT2 Cam
    Comp 105# Springs
    Tune
    Please fill in the rest,...
What else should I replace while I'm in there (other than gaskets of course)? The chain tensioner is so cheap that its a no brainer to replace, but what else do I really need. I don't have money to throw away, but I will spend it if its needed.

    Thanks.

your going to need gaskets...as well as modded retainers to go with those springs...new valve seals...automatic transmission to hold the power:p

I plan on putting new valves and guides as well as all the little things you mentioned above. I love my 5 speed Mike, Its non negotiable. But do I need better injectors, fuel pump, lifters, etc.? Should I remove the balance shaft?
P.S.:I'll be going to the track Saturday. I believe its the last weekend for test and tune. Any advice? I'm a track virgin.

You dont need a fuel pump, 36# injectors would be nice to have...not sure how many K you have, but lifters would be a wise choice yes, (just stock replacements though, not OE-R ones)

You can only delete the balance shaft if you get a double roller timing chain (I think?)

In either case, I would reccommend going to a double roller to be safe, I wish I did, and I am keeping my eyes open to scoop one up when I get some funds...It's just nice for added safety, especially if you start pushing your shift points up past 6000rpm (which mine are set a 6300 on a single chain )

is it really the end of the track already?? I thought it was open till end of October at the very least...Crap, I might have to come out this weekend (I got a side bet with someone that I needa run a certain time :stp:)

Ease into your launch...track will be very slippery, especially because it's cold. Infact, keep in mind that you will actually have less traction on the strip with street tires then on the actual street.

Leave on the last yellow light...don't wait for green, by the time your car moves the light will have turned green...

Oh, and, get an A4 J/ks

          Re: Winter Project.

As far as things you really need: I would go ahead and get reusable rocker bolts, a new harmonic balancer bolt and head bolts.

Things you should consider: head studs, water pump, lifters, timing chain, oil gear drive (oil pump) and spark plugs.

I would leave the balance shaft in this case.

Try launching at different rpms at the track.

            I have 120Km.
Why not the OE-R? I was thinking that If I did replace the lifters, I would get those. I thought they were designed for higher RPM.

I can't remember why right now...do a quick search on here...I believe they were having problems with them, not to mention I believe they are much much louder then stock, and not really needed...

I have the OER lifters right now going on 60,000 miles and will be going to the Comp OE ones , if your not shifting above 6000 RPMS then Comp OE's are perfect, I have the OER's and they are louder and they have more instructions into installing them , if their not right you will have problems. The OE's install at the same specs as stock lifters, and I don't shift over 6000 + RPMS so OE's is better for me. I would get some Come pushrods also either 5/16th's or the bigger Comp .105 ones which I'll be running. If your not going to 130LB springs leave the balance shaft and maybe just get a single timing chain and new tensionor, 36 lB injectors would be good since yoou'll have the cam , my VS cam was running at almost 60% with 36lb(33LB) injectors , so stock ones would have maxed their 80 % value.

                  Re: Winter Project.

What's the safe rev limit for the regular Comp OE lifters. I'd like to go at least to 6500 RPM to take advantage of the GT2 cam. The literature says that it will make power up to 7000 RPM.
I keep reading that the 36lb injectors come from the gtp. I've never read which model years though. Do you by any chance know? I'd like to source them locally if I can.

Thanks Gentlemen. You've been a lot of help.

                    Re: Winter Project.

Get LS7 lifters. GM reliability and they're good to 7K rpm. Thats what pretty much everyone on clubgp is using when replacing lifters.

If you get larger push rods you may have to mod your heads/block a little bit because they can rub, usually it's just a little bit but still. I've used stock push rods and rockers with 130# valve springs for lots of KM's with no negative effects so far.

Are the LS7 lifters a direct swap?

Yup, install them same as you would a stock lifter.

Matt do the Ls7s have as much play in them when you go to torque down your rockers? I.e, I know with the OER-s you have to be very accurate with what size pushrod you use...but with the OEM ones for instance, I am ok to use both my 7.00 pushrods, and my 7.05's have been fine as well...

The LS7's I found out are cheaper than the OE's. Ehhhhhxcellent!

They are actually stock replacements with the same P/N. LS1 and 3800's came with the same lifters, but apparently when the LS7 came out the got a redesign, so they are a little different then what would be stock in any of our cars.

Here is a link to the discussion on club, there are other ones but this was the first one IIRC :
