I used wrenches to get the bolts out no problem took just a few mins. then slowly pulled block forward from trans to seperate them. supported trans with a jack and slowly lifted out the block. not nearly as bad as it sounds. i actually took it out by myself after i got home from work one friday. just be paitent and take your time.
alright...someone mentioned put a headstud in and put the chain through that? where would I put the headstud through? I wont have heads on it anymore....

put a couple head bolts in the block diagnolly, one in drivers side bank rear and one in passenger side front. when you run them into the block run them through the chain links. then connect hoist and lift. removing the engine mounts will help substantually. then support trans and seperate and lift out. Thats how i took mine out and it only took about 15 min of taking my time to get it out, beer breaks, and about 30 min putting it back in with me and my pops. way easy if you ask me. :naughty:
you will basicly have a chain atttached to the block in oposite corners kinda like a purse strap, then lift using that
ok...good news...Got the heads off, all the valves look ok!!...except one seems to have a chunk of metal jammed between it and the head, intake valve to... weird...so I gotta get that out.
Pulled the lifters out, they look pretty good, but I'll have them inspected.
From what I can see through the lifter holes, the cam seems to look alright, but again, Im going to have it inspected...
now, couple questions for you guys...bunch of people keep telling me that even if I buy myself another motor with 50,000km (31,000 miles) that I should replace all the bearings in the motor...should I be worried about stuff like this on a 2005 series 3 motor with those few kilometers? I'm trying not to create extra work for myself here...but if its a good idea, then I might just pony up and do it...

thats great news.. at least for now it is.. but you still need to find out where that chunk of metal came from.
bearings will last a lifetime on an engine if it was properly taken care of, meaning oil changes, oil always full, not overheated, etc.
when buying a used engine you have no idea what it went through, so most people would suggest replacing the bearings, but if the bearings went bad, guess what else is bad? yeah, possibly the crank, rods, cam, etc. if you have an engine that needs the bearings replaced, it has way more problems IMO.
the only thing you can do is take a valve cover off, and look at the valvetrain, you should be able to tell if it was properly maintained or not, due to how clean it is.
I had an engine sit for 12 years and it started up fine, when i tore it apart, the bearings were in good condition
but enough of my ramblings.. i wouldnt replace the bearings.
alright, I was more or less thinking the same thing..just wanted a few more opinions.
How about reusing the headgasket? MLS...they seem kinda indented a little? I'm not tryna cheap out guys, just, if there is no need to buy new parts, then that money is better spent elsewhere...

Buy new head gaskets, thats not a place to re-use something.
Unless you want to be tearing it down again a month from now.
