You don't need to put the heads on to degree the cam.

I think hes just trying to get all he can get done since he needs a new valve for the other head, so hes degreeing it , putting the engine back in and putting the good head on. Thats my understanding.

Hmm...I thought you did need to have the heads on to degree the cam unless you had a special kit? ...my buddy has that magnet thing and - was just going to print off a degree wheel... Also we plan on advancing it 2-4 degrees, so wouldn't having the head on allow us to see interference?

Yes you should check for valve to piston clearance after you degree the cam in, But to degree the cam in your supposed to read off a solid lifter, not the pushrod or rocker. To check valve to piston you generally place clay on the piston top, place the head on with the gasket in place, turn the motor over 2 revaluations and then remove the head. The thickness of the clay is you clearance.

            K few more questions

            1) Can I use the pickup from the fwd engine (its a bit shorter) but it doesn't have tiny metal fragments in it that I am fighting to get out in the other one...

            2) I don't have ac... Can I just keep the fwd oil filter mounting plate? The gasket on the rwd piece is caked on there good...plus it has contaminated oil...

            3) Can I reuse the flexplate bolts?

            4) Can I use a felpro gasket front cover gasket when installing the dbl timming chain...

I got the timing chain on...had to remachine the sprocket that goes on the crank...the chamfer is wayyy off, thats why the dbl chains dont sit right on these cars....put some blue on it and she lines up and seats like a beauty now. I also got the cloyes chain on and we advanced the cam 2*

You guys dont put the tensioner back on right? we were debating putting it back on today, but I think the dbl chain will just eat through it...

Your correct; the double roller does away with the tensioner and the balance shaft.

I know I've found the motor mount spec somewhere in haynes before, but I cant seem to find that mount to motor tq spec...

So if there is no longer a balance shaft, isn't the engine going to have a vibration problem?

no, apparently the shaft is there to control some minor vibrations at a very narrow range of rpms...its required to delete the shaft gears in order to run a dbl roller timing chain, and many guys have done this for many many years now with no issues...

is there a speicific way to make sure the tq converter gets seated properly? I've heard of guys hooking these back up and it somehow doesnt seat properly because there is a trick to it...then boom goes the converter...
