i would say you got unlucky for a fire to happen
DEf. unlucky, it blew in the combustion chamber part, around the top and I had to watch it burn itself out since we were in the middle of no where, saw the smoke and popped the hood latch and alot of smoke then slammed the hood back down. Then the 4 of us had to hitch hike to our summer league basketball game. LOL The others had already passed us. No cell phones back then, unless it was the big brick ones or people had car phones installed.(damm I feel old).

I cant see why she woulda caught fire?...she didnt overhead...she just let go of a rod and tried to blow it out the side lol...and I was doing the speedlimit on the dot...imagine if I was ripping it home lol...

When the oil dumps out onto the hot exhaust you can have a flash fire,it can then spread to wiring/ect causing a bigger longer lasting burn.

I dunno about that...I had a steady leak onto the exhaust pipes...infact my Y pipe has burnt oil spots on it everywhere...I never saw a fire?...been leaking for over 2 years now...anyways the cracks were at the front of the motor, and I didnt loose much oil through the crack...couple spots on the floor of the highway where I pulled off...I still had to drain all the oil when I got home...
the exhaust almost has to be red hot in order for the oil to catch on fire.
The flash point of motor oil ranges from 420*F to 485*F depending on grade. That is far from red hot and lower then the normal temps the exhaust manifolds or pipes before the CAT see. Headers get even hotter.
should I not technically be able to see it ignite everytime it dripped onto the pipe then? Cause I used to lie on the floor and watch it drip down onto the pipe sometimes and just smoke...especially after a few WOT runs...smelled like crap

It take more then just temp to make oil flash. Lots of air helps.
On my 83' Cavy , the piston had got stuck and the rod broke off banging against the wall of the engine block and after we got it home 150 mile tow bill( I was in trouble)LOL over $200) and looked at the golf ball size hole that it made. It was a 2.0 engine so it was sideways in the engine bay, so I think it was either #1 or 3 that blew the hole in the block , I was 16-17 years old so don't remembr much , but I know it blew and then it started on fire, I think the car shut off and when I tried starting it again it blew and caught fire, so I think the piston siezed and broke the rod and then when I tried stating it again it blew and caught fire, then spent the rest of the summer building a engine out of a caddy 2.0 to put in it, my Dad was working for GM at the time and I got the car for $98 since it had a knock in the engine and then fix the knock but then I blew it again from over heating. Good thing I got most parts for free and the 2.0 was a popular engine at the time, but going from 1100 to 5500 feet through the mountains with 4 people and a full trunk was too much for the little guy. LOL After rebuilt I still had the car for 5 more years until I got my 96' Camaro , when it was down I drove the extra car , 75' Nova with a 350 , which I wish I would of kept. It was pretty fast for back then.

it is very very rare for it to happen.
i was loosing a ton of oil when my oil pan was leaking directly onto my exhaust, for years, and never once did it catch on fire.
i just had a ton of oil spill on the exhaust manifolds on my dads car, and again no fire.
it might catch on fire if you run the car at 5000 rpm for 20 minutes and put oil on it, very rarely every day driving (they recalled a bunch of FWD 3.8's because it was causing cars to catch on fire when oil dripped onto the exhaust)
Ive always heard people talk about it...but like mentioned...my rear main and my pan was leaking across the entire bottom of my Y-pipe...it would just smoke a little....been doing that for several years now, and I raced like that...even hot lapped a few times. I'll be happy not to leak anymore now.
So my truck is finally getting some work done, after 17 years, Oil pressure sensor went out and it’s located under the lower intake manifold. Have to...
Hey guys. For starters I’ve always been a big car guy, I love all types of cars and can appreciate all types of engineering. I’ve always been a Chevy...
