  • quick question. pistons or rods?

what makes the compression ratio diferent from a supercharged 3.8L and a N/A one. Is it the pistons, rods or both?

    Thanks

Its the pistons since we can use the same rods for our 9:4.1 ratio N/A pistons.

yes, its the pistons...but I thought we could not use L32 rods with L36 pistons? I thought thats why we needed to go with L32 rods if you went to the diamond piston setup?

Your right I'm just use to th L32 rods with my Diamond pistons. Nice correction thanks.

ok so i spun a rod bearing in my camaro and have a extra s/c 3.8 motor ans was hoping i could use that bottom end and put in my pistons to bring the compression back up. what is different between them that prevent them from interchanging?
does any one have the diamond part number or perhaps a link?

intense sells them...but I have since learned at the diamond pistons are not a good choice, and you are better off going with the JE ones...apparently the diamond pistons skirts are slightly smaller than stock and cause them to bang around in the cylinder and chew up the walls.

I dont know how true that is, but you may want to research into that a little bit.

            zzp has the JE ones.

you could put the GTP pistons into your block...or just use your GTP block all together. Only difference is you will have lower compression. Im not sure what prevents you from putting an L36 piston onto an L32 rod.

But if you just spun a rod bearing, why not take out all your rods/pistons...put new bearings in all your rods, and transfer them over to the good GTP block?...bearings are fairly inexpensive...30$ or so for a set...

And then you'll have a spare intake from the SC motor which you can sell to me:)

I hate when people say Diamond are not good choices, have L32 rods ,and they have been in my car since Dec. of 02' ran 6-11PSI for 4 years in the AZ heat and then ran nitrous 100-150 shots for 2 years and their still going fine, plus the top people in the 11's used diamond piistons so unless your going for 10's then might as well use the JE ones. I would only us JE becuase they have a 9:9.1 Compression ratio.

Abbotts has a flat top that is 10:3 ...not sure what kind they are..they may be diamonds to...anyways I have no experience with them...just stating what I've read...

Re: quick question. pistons or rods?

I cant use my old rods the bearing spun bad enough to miss up the rod and crank i dropped the oil pan and put new bearings in to make it drive/moveable but still has noise and i think a bit of piston slap. i want the s/c motor bottom end but close to stock N.A compression and tryin to figure out which pistons to go with maybe i just need to do some more researach. i dont have alot of money and a set of new pistons was like 900 last i looked.
thats why i was hoping the n/a pistons would fit on the s/c rods cause a new piston from dealer is only like $60 and the other 5 are still good.

New piston is 36$ from napa down in the usa...I just ordered one...you can always look around for a used rod, or order one from your nearest dealership...over here chevy quoted me 130$ for a new rod...so I'm gunna guess in the usa it'll probably run you 70$ lol...

LETZRIDE thats a good idea maybe i will just order a new rod and piston and stick them in the s/c block with the other old rod's and pistons with some new piston rings(im sure the nitrous has worn them out by now) and bearings.
