  • Cam and lifter kit suggestion?

I have a 3.4 camaro and was wanting to replace the stock cam with a performance one. I was looking at a comp cam with a .425 lift that the guy at autozone suggested to me.

But I was wanting to know what you guys think would be the best cam and lift for a 3.4 camaro?

That looks like a somewhat mild cam. I would want something a little more aggressive. Heres a couple I saw that have more lift and probably more overlap.

    COMP-16.233.4
    1993-1995 3.4L V6
    Duration (Intake/Exhaust): 212°/212° @ .050"
    *Valve Lift (w/1.5 Rocker): .440"/.440"
    *Lobe Sep. Angle: 110°

    COMP-16.000.5
CompCams Hydraulic Flat Tappet Camshaft - CUSTOM GRIND
    *1993-1995 3.4L V6
    *Duration (Intake/Exhaust): 226°/236° @ .050"Valve Lift (w/1.5 Rocker): .463"/.474"
    *Lobe Sep. Angle: 112°

I'd look at 60°Inclusive or WOT Tech. They specialize in 60° V6's, and I know John at 60 Inc has a large cam profile database.

I think he is on here too. Forced_Firebird, send him a PM.

that second cam listed looks WAY too aggressive for a street driven 3.4. i hope the threadstarter has a manual or he is going to need a new torque converter, that tiny engine wont make enough torque to move from a stop

Ya I forgot to mention that I have a cool air intake, a flowmaster 80 series muffler, and ya it is a manual.

I was thinking about the .440 because it is the same price as the .425.

EDIT: Also how does a bigger cam affect exhaust sound?

it wont really affect the sound much, it may make it a bit deeper, and have a more lopey sound, thats about it

Ok cool. That's all I was looking for with sound.

Lopey is good, even with a small cam on a 3.8 it still has the effect, so I would imagine with a 3.4 it would do the same. I have heard that the 3.4 will sound better than the 3.8's , just what I have heard from posts but never heard them side by side so I don't know. But I would b't go with flowmaster just me I guess had too many for the 3.8 that I don't like them anymore. Dynomax has proven to be the best for my 3.8 cammed/turbo car.

I really like the flowmaster on my 3.4. But do you guys think the cam with the .440 lift would be the best?

I would do what Warshrike said and look into PM'ing 60degree inclusive , he does 3.4's to where there like 3.8's so he would know whats best for your 3.4, I have never worked on a F-body 3.4 so I can only refer you to where you can get the correct info. Good luck with it , post up your results.

We work on 3800's too ;)

Here's our most popular iron head cam on a 3.4/3500 hybrid in a Datsun with chambers opened up to drop compression from 12.3:1 to 11.3:1 (32.4cc to 36cc)....

and here's what can be done if you use an OBD1 swap kit and tune for an awesome cam (94-95 manuals only, all 93's)...

                      and chambers being measured...

How did you like the 3800 porting in your car, Warshrike? Got any dyno numbers for us yet? :D

You might want to tell him your goal for the car if its N/A , nitrous, or FI then he can tell you or make you the cam size you want for the car.
